She broke the spell between us by sitting in her chair and focusing on her tablet as though I wasn't about to kiss her.
“We are on schedule with the timeline, but there are a few things I want to look into in the miscellaneous tasks area from before I took over the project. I don't want to run into any timed surprises now that we are back on track.” Judy-Lynn stood, this time with her tablet as though she prepared to leave. “I will meet you at the Commodore at seven. Be ready to be impressed.”
Then she left me to my sexy thoughts and expected me to concentrate on work.
CHAPTER 13
Judy-Lynn
“O
w.” I gritted my teeth as Brooke yanked on my head for what felt like the millionth time. I was a tender head and naturally hated it when someone else did my hair, but I was in a hurry. The movie started at seven thirty, and I wanted to meet Ryu at seven.
This wasn't a press event, so I doubted anyone would notice him unless they were fans of tech giants or business people. On the off chance, I planned to wear my 70's hot mama shades which would pair perfectly with my outfit that paid homage to the book without being a full blown cosplay.
"You'll be fine. I didn't yank any hair,” Brooke said with the long-suffering that only the mother of a child with tight curly hair would understand.
Chantel glanced up from doing my makeup. “You're lucky that we love you. I had a hot date of my own. Look up so I can do your under eye.”
I shifted my gaze upward so she could color my waterline. My eyes watered. “With that Tim guy?”
“Yes.”
“I think you can do better.” Brooke clucked her tongue when I nodded my head in agreement. She added,“We both think so.”
"Oh, no doubt, but a girl's got needs, and I'm way too busy to weed out all the busters, creepsters, and jerks out there while trying to find the decent guys.” She moved away from me. “There. You are beautiful, as always.”
“Almost done.” Brooke stepped around me so that she was in front of me with a small brush about the size of a toothbrush. She gently brushed along my hairline to create small waves around the crown of my head until she had the look she desired. “This is easier on Brookelynn, but you look so good.”
Brooke held out her hand to Chantel, who slapped it. “We do good work.”
I hugged them both and then went to my door mirror. It was me, but it was a stylized 70's version. A fab, sexy mama in a short green and white floral dress with a V-neck collar and bell sleeves. I turned to the side to catch my profile in my brown wooden-soled platform sandals. My ponytail trailed down my back. It was an extension because I wanted a straight-haired look, and I wasn't letting a flat iron next to my curls for nothing. My curly locks were safely tucked in a bun underneath, and edge control gave me the style I wanted.
If not for my besties, it would have taken me double the time to prepare.
“Well?” Chantel asked.
“I look great.”
“You're going to jail,” she corrected.
“It's illegal to look that good,” Brooke chimed in with a grin. “Now for the Y test. Marcus.”
I heard the thump of footfalls on the stairs before a tall man with coffee-brown skin entered my bedroom. He held a little buttery brown version of himself in his arms. The toddler waved at us. “Is it my turn?”
“Yes,” Brooke answered.
He gave me a once-over. “Respectfully, if I wasn't a happily married man with a family and I was out in these streets, I'd try to hit that. Good luck bagging my man. I need another brother to talk to in the estrogen sea.”
I smiled at his carefully crafted compliment. “Thank you, Marcus. I don't know about all that. I can't just bring anyone into our family. They have to fit.”
“As long as you like him, we'll make room for him,” he said.
“Aw, baby, that was so sweet.” Brooke kissed him.
They pulled away when MJ pushed between them. “Mommy and Daddy, breathe.”
I coughed to cover my laugh, then pushed all three of them out of the room. “Y'all go and pick up with your plans. I've got it from here. Love you.”
