“I know you rehearsed what you were going to say, only for this bastard not to show up.”
“I had multiple speeches, but now what do I do?”
“I don’t even know what to tell me.”
“Tell me something.” I implored.
“Just keep coming to work until someone says different. When he comes back, just kill him with professionalism. Act like the club never happen.”
“Now I’m going to be a nervous wreck tomorrow, too.”
“Inhale and exhale. You can face that problem on Tuesday.”
“You’re right. I will text you later. I have to get some work done today.”
“Okay, bye.”
“Bye.” I ended the call.
I took a look at my computer screen. I had to take another look. His calendar really said he was out of the office all damn day. With my hand down going over some reports, I thought about my encounter with Kyle at the Six Dimension. It was more like a confrontation.
Surviving Monday was an ordeal. I was afraid someone from HR was going to come to my desk and tell me to hit the road. But that didn’t happen. I couldn’t wait to get into the comfort of my sedan.
Chinese food was what I craved; I stopped and picked up a meal from my favorite place.
When I arrived home, I planted myself on the couch in front of the TV with my food and a glass of chardonnay. When I finished eating, the doorbell startled me. Jordyn didn’t say she was stopping by. I eased my butt off the couch and went to the door and took a peek through the peephole.
There was an older White man standing there in a suit jacket. I wasn’t afraid. But I was confused. I’m sure he had the wrong door.
“Can I help you?” I raised my voice, hoping he could hear me clearly through the door.
“Ms. Bolden, I have a delivery for you. I’m going to leave it here at your door. Good day. Ms. Bolden.”
I stared out the peephole and watched the stranger walk down the hall and turn into the stairwell. I didn’t know if I should open the door. Rushing to my window, I looked out and saw the man get into a Bentley and drive away from my apartment complex.
I walked back over to my door and peeked out of the peephole one more time. I didn’t see anything and took a chance. Quickly opening my door, I looked out and then down on the carpet. There was a huge box black box about three feet tall with a large red bow sitting right outside my door.
Strange, I opened my door wide enough to drag the box inside my place. The box wasn’t heavy. I locked my front door and picked up the box, and placed it on my kitchen table. Rushing to the couch, I grabbed my cell phone. I snapped a quick picture and sent it to Jordyn via text message.
Jordyn: [What’s that?]
Aerica: [A gift that was at my front door.] I texted back.
Jordyn: [From who???]
Aerica: [IDK]
I waited for her to return my text. Then there was a knock on the door. I scurried over to see Jordyn through my peephole doing a little dance. When I opened the door, she almost knocked me over coming inside.
“What’s in the box?!” Jordyn asked, imitating Brad Pitt in the movie Seven.
I didn’t have a Morgan Freeman impersonation in my arsenal. So I said, “I don’t know.”
“Do you want me to open it?”
“Yes, I do, but I can’t have you open it if there’s poison on the box or in the box.”
“Girl, why are you so paranoid? Let’s see what’s in the box.”
