Jenn was sitting at the reception desk. Now I wondered if the rumor about her leaving for California was true or false. Who knew?
I made my way around the corner. Kathy was there already.
“Good morning.” I said when I walked pass her desk to get to my own.
“Good morning. I can’t believe I beat you to work.”
“I needed a little more sleep this morning.” I explained.
“He’s really working you hard. So, I understand.
I nodded along as Kathy chatted away, recounting her weekend adventures. But despite her best efforts, my thoughts kept drifting back to my run-in with Kyle.
“Aerica, where did you go?”
I snapped back into the moment. “I just have a lot of things on my mind.”
“Well, I have some good news.”
“I’m ready for some good news.”
“Did you turn on your computer?”
“No, not yet.”
“Well, you go and turn your computer on and check the calendar. There’s a surprise for you. I’m going to the breakroom to get us some coffee. I started a pot about ten minutes ago.”
I watched Kathy walk toward the breakroom. I started my computer up and waited. I looked over the partition and Kyle’s office door was closed. I just knew he was in there waiting to fire me in front of the entire bullpen.
I waited for my computer to boot up and I went to my calendar. There wasn’t anything on it, really, just reminders to do things that involved Kyle’s calendar. Maybe she wanted me to check Kyle’s calendar. I tapped a few keys and his daily schedule appeared on my screen. What the fuck? He’s out of the office all day. I was reading it but I couldn’t believe it.Why did he take off?
I sat there in a daze. I didn’t understand this man at all. Was he working remote? Or was he sick? While I was pondering the possibilities, Kathy returned with my coffee and hers. She placed my cup on my desk and leaned on the corner of my cubicle wall.
“Did you see it?” She asked.
“I did.”
“I wonder what happen, or ran him away. The man doesn’t get sick and the only time he’s taken any days off were when his parents died. He didn’t even take a day off when he broke up with his girlfriend.”
“He had a girlfriend?” I refused to believe it, even though she mentioned it before.
“Yes, she was a beautiful Armenian lady in her late twenties or early thirties.”
“How old is Kyle?” I asked.
“Thirty-two.”
“How do you know all these things?”
“I have a reliable source.”
“I can’t believe he had a girlfriend.”
“What do you mean? He’s a very good-looking guy.”
“Yeah, but he’s rude and mean and arrogant.”
“Most women overlook those things when the man is handsome and has a nice body and tight bum.”
