“I don’t care what he is, as long as he stays away from me.”
When our food arrived, we ate until our stomachs hurt. I stayed with my one drink minimum; I knew I had to have a fresh head for work tomorrow.
I took a deep breath as I walked into the office the next morning, mentally preparing for another day navigating Kyle’s bitchy moods. It was Thursday. I had one more day and then it was the weekend. I was close to doing a full week with Malibu Ken.
A few employees murmured quiet greetings as I passed by. The atmosphere felt subdued and weighed down by uncertainty. The employees here at FuSeWater were nice people, but they were always on edge.
I settled in at my desk, organizing my papers and switching on my computer. I placed my purse in the bottom drawer. As the screen flickered to life, I looked over at his office door. I wondered if he was in there. It was weird how he could see us, but we couldn’t see him.
The phone on my desk suddenly rang, jolting me from my thoughts. I just sat my ass down. I answered briskly, “Good morning, this is Aerica at FuSeWater. How can I help you?”
“Temp girl, get in my office.”
I hung up the phone and sighed. The brief moment of optimism faded fast. But I couldn’t let Kyle intimidate me.
I grabbed a pen and my purple notebook. I trotted myself right into his office.
“Good morning, Mr. Caldwell.” I bellowed my greeting like I was really that happy in the morning.
His eyes leered up from his desk. “Are you aware that I fired Tim yesterday?”
“Yes, I saw him crying.”What a bastard.
“A grown man crying.”
“Men cry sometimes.”
“He’s gone. So I’m going to need you to take over his job as social media content creator.”
“So, who’s your admin going to be?”
“You. I know you can handle it. You might have to stay late some nights, but you can figure that out later.”
“I work for a temp agency. I can’t stay late.”
“You can, and you will.”
“They are only paying me forty hours a week.”
“I’m paying them so you will get paid for every single minute you are here and working in this building or in the field.”
“How long before you find another social media content creator?”
He shrugged. “I’ll let you know. Any idiot can post on social media.”
“I have to have access to the accounts.”
“You will have that by the end of the day. Did you make hotel and travel arrangements for the Southwest distributors?”
“I did.”
“Did you reserve the conference room?”
“Yes, I did.”
“The big one?”
“Yes, J55.”
