King stepped back from me, his arms dropping to his side. “Nyla, why would you hit her? I told you this wouldn’t change anything for us. All we had to do was wait until the DNA test was complete. I’ve never seen you like this. All you needed to do was listen to me.” At this point, he was yelling at me.
“Why the fuck are you coming at me like this?” I pointed at Marysa, who had an evil glint in her eyes. “She’s the one who’s lying. Why would I attack her? King, her son’s not even yours. Her ex-husband has those kids. She’s playing you.”
When he spoke, his voice was cold. I wasn’t sure who he was mad at, but I knew it had better not be me. “Marysa, I’ll have someone take care of you and get you home.” He turned to the two men behind him. “Daniel. Ethan. My apologies for the scene tonight. If you don’t mind, can you find someone to help get Marysa home?” Marysa was now standing against the wall, but still tried to convey the damsel-in-distress look. “I’ll be in touch with you both to discuss how Overwatch and King Technologies can partner in the future.”
Both men nodded as they looked between me and Marysa. The taller one with the blond hair reached out his hand. “Ethan Dickerson.”
“Nyla Robinson. Sorry to meet under these circumstances.” I could only imagine how embarrassing this was for everyone standing around, especially King.
The other, darker-haired one, also introduced himself. “Daniel Pearson. Nice to meet you.” I shook his hand as King wrapped his arm around my waist.
“I’m going to take this one home. Gentlemen. I’ll be in touch.”
“King? What about me?” Marysa yelled as we were about to leave. “You owe me. I’m the mother of your son.”
He shook his head. “Until a DNA test tells me otherwise, you’re nothing to me.”
I wanted to be happy about what he said. To know he believed me, or at least wouldn’t automatically take her side. Honestly, I hated being on the other side of the coin with King. Yes, he was grumpy, and his attitude left something to be desired. But with me, there had always been some softness there.
Until I saw the look in his eyes tonight when he thought I’d disobeyed him and attacked Marysa. And honestly, that scared me.
Chapter Ten
King
I
needed a fucking drink. The ride home was filled with silence. When I walked into that bathroom and saw Marysa on the ground, I was upset. Not at Nyla, but at myself. I never should have left her alone. Not even for a minute. Marysa showing up in my life right at this moment was like a bad fucking dream.
When we arrived at my house, I let Nyla in before heading over to the fancy living room the decorator swore I needed.
“Mr. Solomon, when you and your family entertain guests, you’ll need a room like this.”
Not once since I moved into the house had I everentertained. I didn’t like strange people in my space. Yet, she was here. Nyla was across the room, her hands trailing along some of the family pictures on a Baby Grand piano that I didn’t know how to play.
It was one of those must-have items from the decorator that I probably paid too much money for.
Nyla hadn’t spoken one word to me since we left the event. I don’t blame her. I was an asshole. Again. But she made me fucking crazy. My heart pounded in my chest when I walked up to the ladies’ restroom and heard yelling.
My words to her… Yeah, I’m surprised she didn’t slap the shit out of me right then and there.
I closed my eyes for a moment and swallowed the harsh whiskey in my glass.
Doesn’t Nyla understand that if anything had happened to her, I would never be the same? It didn’t matter that we hadn’t slept together. Or that words of love hadn’t passed our lips. She was my world, and if anyone harmed her, there would be hell to pay.
“What happened in that bathroom, Nyla?” I needed to hear the words from her own mouth.
She shrugged and shook her head. “It was fine.”
“No. You don’t get to pull that shit with me tonight. I want to know what happened. Why did you hit Marysa?” Did I think she did it unprovoked? No. I knew my woman, and she would never react that way. Something happened.
She turned, pinning me with a hard glare. “So now you fucking care what happened? Because what did you say to me back there?” She put one hand on her hip, the other up to her head as if thinking. “Oh, yeah, now I remember.Nyla, why would you hit her?As if I just go around punching bitches. You took her side tonight. The woman who cheated on you. Left you heartbroken. Then showed back up ten fucking years later, talking about how you have a son. Are you fucking kidding me now?” She threw up her hands. “You know what? Fuck this shit. I don’t need to be here tonight. I don’t need you. You can go back to that two-timing bitch. Just leave me the fuck alone.” She picked up her evening purse and began walking to the door. “I was gonna leave your ass anyway. I can’t wait to move on with my life. What the fuck was I thinking? All that bullshit you were saying tonight about how I belonged to you. It meant nothing. How could you take her word over mine?” She snapped at me before rolling her eyes. “Another man who doesn’t know what he really wants.”
At this point, she was rambling, so I wasn’t too worried. But then, something she said made my blood run cold.
Was she going to leave me?
Rushing behind her, I grabbed her hand and turned her around. My other hand grabbed her by the neck. Not that I would ever hurt her, but I did need her attention focused solely on me. Yes, I messed up, but her threatening to leave me was not how this worked.
