He shrugged. “Never said I wasn’t.”

I stood there, chest heaving, breath coming out in short bursts. This is not how I wanted to begin the night. Come Monday, he would find out just how fed up I was with his highhanded behavior. But as I stared at him, I also couldn’t help but notice how good he looked. Black suit, white shirt, and a red pocket square. How the hell did he know I would be wearing red tonight? Maybe he didn’t. It could be a fluke. Don’t look into it too much because it means nothing.

His head cocked to look at me. Standing from the vehicle, he straightened his suit. King opened the back door of the car. “Get in the car, Nyla.”

His gaze was hard. His tone brooked no argument. For about five seconds, we stood there staring at each other. He wouldn’t ask again. Why? Because he expected me to obey him.

Could he be any fuller of himself? I may want to fuck him within an inch of his life, but he was still insufferable.

“Fine. I’ll ride with you. But next time, if I say I’m driving myself, I need you to respect my wishes.” Lifting the front hem of my dress, I walked over to stand in front of him. Even with my heels on, he still towered over me. “I don’t like being bullied, King.”

He tilted his head to the side as he motioned to the vehicle. “We arrive and leave together. That’s how it’s been since you started working for me. That’s how it’ll always be. You don’t ride by yourself or arrive with anyone else. Same goes for me.”

All I could do was shake my head. “You’re not making any damn sense. Do you remember that you left me standing at my door? That you were rude as hell to me all week?”

One side of his mouth lifted in a half-smile, but he remained silent.

There was no arguing with him when he was in one of these moods. The man was stubborn as hell, and when he got an idea in his head, nothing could change his mind. After climbing inside, I took a moment to ensure my dress made it all the way in. Once King closed the door, I looked straight ahead when he entered the car from the other side. Yes, I agreed to ride with him, but that didn’t mean I needed to talk to him.

“Johnson, you can head to the event,” he instructed the driver through the privacy window, which separated the front of the car with the driver from the people riding in the back. After he closed it, King turned his head to look at me. “You look beautiful tonight, Nyla. My very own lady in red.” Suddenly he smiled. “And your jewelry looks amazing against your bare skin. Sweetheart, you were made to wear diamonds.” Without warning, he leaned over to capture my lips in a soft kiss.

My heart was such a traitor. At his words, it began beating faster.

But when he kissed me, my pussy started singing his praises and wishing he would go further.I ain’t never said one bad thing about King.

My fingers raised to my lips. “What was that for?”

His blue gaze never left my face. “Because I couldn’t help myself. You and I both know there’s something between us. Even though we’ve both tried to hide from the truth for… a long time. We proved it last week. I’m tired of holding back.”

Maybe I fell and hit my head. This had to be a dream, or maybe I was in a coma. Did King really just say he wanted me? Had wanted me for a while? “But you never said anything.”

We were still only inches away from each other, and my hands itched to pull him closer. As a woman, I was ready to have the sole attention of King Solomon; the man known to leave broken hearts wherever he went.

“I wasn’t sure if you wanted the same thing I did. Not until last week.”

My head reared back. “But you ignored me all week. Other than a stupid good morning greeting, you barely said five words to me all week. Now you have the nerve to kiss me?”

“Yes. And I’m going to do it again.” Placing one hand underneath my chin, he gently pulled my head closer. “I’ve been dreaming about tasting your lips for too damn long. If you truly don’t want me the way I want you, if I’ve read this wrong, tell me now. I’ll stop, and we’ll go back to the way it was before. But sweetheart, please don’t tell me no.” My hand lifted to rest on the outside of his suit. “My beautiful, irresistible Nyla. You have no idea what you do to me.”

The car drove down the road, but my attention was only on King. His words. His touch. The last time we got this close, he seemed to push me away.

“Wait, so you didn’t regret what happened the other week?”

He smiled. “No. I wanted to give you time to come to grips with everything. Because now that I’ve tasted you, I refuse to let you go. Be ready, sweetheart. Because tonight, after the event, I’m taking you home, and I’m going to fuck you so hard you won’t know where you end, and I begin.”

I gasped. My pussy pulsed. “King,” his name escaped my lips in a breathy moan. Could this really be happening?

“And soon enough, you’ll recognize that you’re my Queen. I’m not a good person. Never claimed to be. There are only four people in this world I give a fuck about. My parents. My brother. And you.” I realized that was the second time he had made a comment about me being his Queen. He used one hand to cradle my jaw. His blue eyes roamed over my face, and I melted under his touch. “I haven’t always done the right thing, and I make no promises about the future. But for you, to be with you, I’ll try.”

His lips pressed against mine, and I could do nothing but fall under his spell. If this was a new and improved King, I wasn’t sure I could walk away. Having him in my arms was everything I wanted. Being close to him. Feeling his tall frame press against mine. His lips capturing mine in sensual kisses made me want to say screw this event. He needed to be inside me. Fucking me. Making me his.

I had fleeting thoughts about the letter I was meant to give him on Monday.

My resignation.

My fresh start.

My walking papers.
