Porsha still didn’t look convinced, as I heard my phone going off near the dresser. I went to it to answer, as Porsha went back to checking her makeup. I sighed before disconnecting the call.
“That was Jasper. He forgot to pick up the cake, so I have to go get it.”
“Do you want me to go?”
I shook my head. “I’m going to go to the bakery and drop it off at my parents. My mom specifically wanted the cake there before the party and, of course, my brother screwed up on that too.”
“Don’t be pissed at Jasper. Besides, you don’t have to make a double trip. I can go too.”
“It’s fine, babe. I have to make another stop anyway, so there’s no rush.”
“Okay.”
I gave her another kiss, and she smiled. “I’ll see you when I get back. But make sure you’re ready.”
“I was already ready.”
“Really?”
She noticed me staring at her feet where she had on a pair of sleep socks. “I could quickly take those off.”
“I’ll be back.”
She nodded, as I grabbed my phone and quickly went out the room. I headed downstairs and went to the entryway to get my keys. There was a reason to why I didn’t want Porsha to come with me. This errand wasn’t about Abuela’s cake. There was somewhere else I needed to be, which was a surprise for Porsha. Hopefully, when she saw it, it would put a smile on her face.
Once I ran my errand, I returned to the condo to find the place dark. I became paranoid because I knew Porsha was still there.
“Porsha!” I yelled while walking into the living room. Since I parked outside, I had to check to see if Porsha’s car was still in the garage. I opened the garage door to see her car was gone.
“What the hell?” I whispered as I went back inside.
I ran upstairs to our bedroom, seeing the only light she left on was from the bathroom. I turned on the bedroom lamp and looked around to see some of her personal ideas were missing from the dresser. I noticed a piece of paper was lying on the bed as I walked over to it. I picked it up and began reading it, realizing why Porsha wasn’t there.
“Fuck.”
I let the letter fall on the beige carpet as I slowly sat down. I stared ahead at my reflection in the mirror, wondering how things changed in a matter of minutes. I slowly reached into my pocket and pulled out a black ring box. I opened it to stare at the three-karat platinum engagement ring that I was going to give Porsha during the party. I already had my family’s blessing to marry her, so they were all excited, especially my abuela.
I threw the box across the room, seeing it hit against the mirror. I shook my head, wondering what possessed Porsha to do what she just done. I gave my heart to her, and she instantly crushed it. That’s why I never invested on being in love because of shit like this. Now, I knew I would never do that with anyone else ever again.
CHAPTER 1
Remy
Present Day…
“D
elgado Industries, may I place you on hold, please?”
I glanced at the receptionist, April, who quickly acted like she was working. I looked at the phone, then at her, wondering if she was going to take the call off of hold. I shook my head, knowing she’d be gone in a few days. She was the third receptionist that filled the position within a month, and she was not cutting it. I didn’t know where I could find good help these days; hopefully soon.
I still couldn’t believe I owned my own business. A multi-million dollar business. When I first started Delgado Industries, I barely knew what the hell I was doing. I was young and ambitious, but I was also naïve. As I began to build my business, I had to go through several obstacles to get to this point, too many to count. From faulty partnerships to almost losing my business a few years ago, I had to learn fast the importance of being business-minded in the tech industry. I felt I was too soft starting out; but, now, I wasn’t going to let anyone stand in my way of success. That’s why I turned my small business into a powerhouse that it was today.
I walked into my office and closed the door. I looked around the huge space, wondering if I should do another remodel, when I walked over to the window overlooking the city. I stared at the skyline, taking a deep breath as I watched the traffic go through downtown. A few thoughts had crossed my mind, from whether I would receive word regarding my latest merger with a company that’s ready to sell, from my meeting with an international tech dealer looking to make their mark in the states. But, another thought that came to mind was something I hadn’t thought about in some time. I pushed that though out as I went to my desk. There was no point in thinking about anything from my past. That’s why it was called the past for a reason.
I don’t need her; I can have any woman I want.
This was true, considering I had multiple dates with various women within the last couple of months. My parents wondered would I ever settle down, but I didn’t need to. I had a huge business that I was trying to secure for further wealth, so I didn’t have time to be tied down with anyone. Besides, I tried that already and see how that turned out.
