CHAPTER 12

Kent

“M

ove in with me.” I winced as the words unceremoniously left my mouth.

Madison was in my arms after another round of passionate sex. I’d meant to broach the subject at a different time. The truth was, I’d wanted to raise the topic since Elsie’s attack, but everything was so new with us I’d hesitated.

“Is the sex that good that you want me at your disposal?”

I kissed an unmelanated spot on her shoulder. “I won’t deny there’s some truth to what you say, but I have a different reason for asking.”

She twisted in my arms. “You sound way too serious for a naked conversation.”

With a quick tug, I had her back in my arms. “Clothes won’t change my reasons or my request.”

“Move in with me doesn’t sound like a request.”

I shrugged. “So you agree you don’t have a choice.”

“Ihaven’t agreed to anything, and before I do, I need to know where this is coming from. And you might want to explain with the swiftness before I take your bossiness some kind of way.”

Understanding that Madison took my previous response as dismissiveness, I took her hand in mine and laced our fingers together. “We’ve managed to keep the fact that we’re seeing each other a secret until now. Even if I wanted to continue, I won’t be able to hide what you mean to me.”

“I’m still not getting how you went from zero to one hundred.”

“Are you forgetting there’s a serial killer on the loose targeting women I’ve slept with? You are more than a random one-night stand, which means you’re in danger. Do you really expect me to let you walk away from me at the end of each day as if I won’t spend the hours until I see you again worrying? I’ve lost one love of my life. I can’t risk losing another.”

“Kent…”

“No, little bunny. I barely survived after Lola, and although what we have is new, it’s more intense and deeply rooted than what I shared with her. There won’tbea me without you, so don’t try to convince me everything will be okay.”

This time when Madison pulled away, I let her. She turned to face me, sitting cross-legged and with a frown to match mine.

“What will I tell my parents?”

“My vote would be the truth.”

Madison shook her head, shooting my response down. “Not yet. You have to make amends with my mother before I can tell them we’re dating.”

“What’s the worst that could happen if we tell them first and I make amends later?”

She arched her brow and twisted her lips. “Do not play with me.”

I smirked at the unintended suggestion behind her response.

“And get your mind out of the gutter. You know my mother’s reputation when you cross her professionally. You offended her personally. She will rip you to shreds before she’ll accept you in my life. And this time, my dad won’t be able to vouch for you.”

“Fine, tell her you’re taking me up on the offer I first made for you to stay in this penthouse because things at work are heating up and you’ll be working longer hours. Mention it being safer for you to not be on the road late at night and you’ll have her on board.”

Madison hugged herself while contemplating my suggestion. “That could work. I wouldn’t be lying…”

“Why do I hear a but coming?”

“What if Ife comes for a visit? We never discussed how to tell her.”

“I won’t hide you from my daughter. You aren’t someone I’m ashamed to be with, and it would be better for her to find out from us in person, anyway.”
