Maddie stared at me like she was studying for the MCATs. Her icy gaze sent me into fight mode. But as she turned on her heel and stormed towards the front door, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of victory.

When we entered the foyer, Kyle was standing there. He appeared from out of nowhere like a magician. His eyes were staring daggers straight at Maddie.

“Maddie, what the fuck are you doing here? It’s over between us. Aerica is my girlfriend.”

I watched Maddie’s face fall into the moon door. She stood there, silent. Kyle didn’t give her a chance to speak. He grabbed her by her arm and yanked her right out the door. Maddie stumbled as she tried to keep her balance. I didn’t like when men manhandled women, but this time I was going to give him a pass.

“Do not come back here,” he ordered, with a deep, frosty tone.

Kyle slammed the door shut behind her. He turned to me. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, the doorbell rang and when I open the door, she just barged in.” I felt the need to explain to him what had transpired before he arrived. “Are you okay?”

“I’m good. I don’t know why she keeps showing up here. It’s been well over for months with us.”

Kyle grabbed my hand and pulled me behind him until we were in the living room. He quickly planted a kiss on my lips. His arms snaked around my body and I sunk into his hard chest. When he finally broke our kiss, he just stared down at me.

“You’re so beautiful.” Kyle ran his thumb over my cheek.

“Thank you.”

“You are mine. I’m not going to let anyone or anything come between us.”

I shook my head. He had me in a trance. “Are you hungry? Mrs. Rodriguez made food. I can put it in the oven.”

He thought about my question. “I could eat.”

“It’s lasagna. I’ll warm it up.”

“I need a shower.”

We parted ways and I walked to the kitchen, and he went upstairs. I had a million questions about Maddie, but I didn’t want to seem insecure. I loved being in the cult of Kyle. Maybe I was overthinking this blossoming relationship. But I couldn’t help it. I was happy, and I really wanted to stay this way.

y hot shower helped to revitalize me. I made my way downstairs to the dinning room. There were plates and utensils placed on the dinner room table. Aerica already had the food on the table when I arrived. The lasagna was on the table with a large bowl of tossed salad and breadsticks. With the two lit candles, she made it all look so appealing. She even had a bottle of wine sitting on the table with two empty wine glasses.

I walked around the table and took it all in. “This looks nice.”

“I didn’t cook it. I just warmed it up.”

“Still looks good.” I pulled her chair out for her. Aerica lowered herself into the chair and scooted under the table.

Aerica pointed to the wine on the table. “Can you open the wine?”

“I can.” I opened it and poured some into her glass and then in mine. I took my seat across the table from my love. Glancing across the table, I was so happy she was here. But what was she thinking?

“So, that was your ex-girlfriend, Maddie.”

“Yes.”

“How long did you date?”

“I believe it was two years.” I wanted to be as transparent as possible. I didn’t want her to think there was anything going on with Maddie and me.
