Exa rushed from the room. When she stepped into the hall, there was Scar.
“I thought you went to Declan,” Exa said.
“I couldn’t leave you.”
Shit. Did he hear everything? “You heard what she said?”
He nodded. “She hadn’t wanted us on the case, huh?”
Exa stared down, unable to meet his gaze.
“Don’t do that.” He lifted her chin. “It’s okay,” Scar told her.
“I wanted to tell you.” Exa blinked back tears. Why the fuck did she keep crying like a weak bitch?
“Exa, I know there are things you have to keep from me because you’re part of the Timeless. And until I’m accepted by them, I have to accept those secrets. I’m willing to. I will never get mad at you for following orders. I accept everything that comes along with you. I’d never blamed you for accepting orders. Okay?”
Exa wiped her cheeks. “Okay.”
“Now, let’s go home. I need some pain pills,” Scar told her.
“Scar!” Nova called from the other room.
Shit. She’d heard them.
“Yes, ma’am,” Scar called out.
“You’ve passed. But you still must come to headquarters to be sworn in as her guardian.”
Scar’s eyes widened. Exa laughed. He’d passed. He’d really passed. He was her guardian. That meant no more secrets. He was in the loop now. Over the comms, her team cheered. Exa grabbed his hand and pulled him away from the door. They needed to leave before Nova changed her mind. When they reached upstairs, they stepped into chaos. Dead bodies were everywhere.
“Hey, Exa,” agents greeted her as she strode through the room.
“Hey, Exa’s guardian,” they said in greeting to Scar.
When Exa and Scar finally made it outside, they found Declan with their medic. He’d been stabbed in the leg. It wasn’t a serious wound. But their medic was taking extra special care of Declan. So much so that he seemed reluctant to leave. But they had to go. When they arrived at the safe house, their mix-match team was waiting for them.
Exa hugged them all and answered all of their questions until Novak forced her and Scar to the med room to get patched up. She was shocked they’d all stayed up, waiting for her and Scar to return home. After the doc patched them up, they popped some pain pills, then washed up before going to bed. It felt so good to finally relax in bed next to her man.
Scar held her close, despite his wounds. “I’m your official guardian now,” he mumbled, half asleep.
“Not yet. You still have to be sworn in.”
“Still, it’s almost official. That means from now on, you need to do what I say.”
Exa started to correct him but chose to let it slide. She was too sleepy to explain how guardians worked.
“Exa,” Scar whispered.
“Yes,” Exa said before yawning.
“I’m glad you didn’t kill him.”
“Really? Why?”
“Because now, when you have a nightmare about him, I can just take you to the Timeless prison and let you cut on him until you’re done being mad.”
Exa chuckled. “Yes. I plan to make him suffer at least once a year. But the Timeless guards will take care of that for me every day of the week.”
