“Do you want to talk about it?” he asked.
“I don’t know,” she mumbled against his chest.
Scar smiled. His poor baby.
“Do you want me to keep pestering you until you finally talk, or do you want me to support you silently?”
Again, she mumbled, “I don’t know.”
“Can I choose for myself?” he asked.
She hesitated before saying, “I don’t know.”
Scar eased her back so he could stare down into her face. That’s when he saw the unshed tears in her eyes. All laughter and teasing ceased.
He cupped her cheeks and asked, “What happened?”
Exa shook her head.
“Tell me,” Scar demanded.
A lone tear dripped down her cheek, causing a crack to follow a similar path across his heart. One thing he couldn’t bear was seeing his woman cry.
“Exa!” He yelled, not knowing what to do. He was so damn tired of feeling helpless. “Tell me what you need me to do,” he told her.
Her watery gaze rose to his. Scar was ready to kill someone. Whoever she pointed out would die the most painful death possible.
“Tell me,” he told her. “Whatever it is, I’ll do it.”
“Promise?” she whispered.
“I swear, love.”
She wiped her face and whispered, “You’re such a good person.”
“I’m not good. I’m just good to you. I’ll always be good to you.”
His words that were supposed to bring her comfort caused her to sob. She pressed her face into his chest again and cried. He’d never seen her like this. Not even in the field when she was facing danger and death.
“Exa, what happened in that meeting? Tell me, love.”
Face still pressed against his chest, she shook her head. Whatever it was, she didn’t want to tell him. Or maybe she wasn’t allowed to tell him.
“Is it classified information?”
A few seconds ticked by, and then she nodded.Shit. It wouldn’t be fair of him to pry into her Timeless business. On the other hand, he didn’t like seeing her like this. He also didn’t like her keeping things from him.
Yet, he could understand her not telling him Timeless information. She’d been with the Timeless most of her life. She’d only been with him for a little while. She didn’t trust him enough to share classified info with him.
She may never trust him enough to share classified information with him. However, the fact that they were now working together on a case had made him think she and the Timeless trusted his abilities enough to share information with him.
Apparently, he was wrong. That shouldn’t sting as much as it did. Exa stopped crying and raised her head. Taking a deep breath, she held it in as she wiped her cheeks. Releasing the breath in a rush, she stepped out of his embrace.
Scar’s arms fell to his side as he watched her step away from him. Though she hadn’t spoken a word yet, her actions were loud as hell. She was distancing herself from him.Like hell!Scar stepped forward, closing the distance between them.
“I’m not a demanding man,” he told her. “I can handle you being a Timeless agent. If I have to handle you keeping secrets, I will for now. But you told me if your Superior approved of me, then I’d be made your guardian, right?”
She nodded.
