“And he didn’t want her to be hurt,” Enzo said. “Fuck!”

Eve’s heart broke for Enzo and his grandfather. She’d never had much of a family. But she had grown close to her sister a few years ago. Losing her sister had damn near destroyed her. It sent her fleeing to another country, leaving her old life behind.

“I need to know for sure,” Enzo said, stepping toward the body on the ground.

Eve watched him search the man’s pockets until he found a phone. It needed a fingerprint. He used the man’s thumb to unlock the phone.

“There’s a number programmed in here as boss. That’s either Emelia or the don of the Bianchi family.” Enzo pressed the name. The phone started to ring. He put it on speakerphone. A female voice came over the line.

“Is it done?” Emelia asked.

Enzo closed his eyes. Eve watched all the color drain from his face.

Eve

“Is it done?” Emeliaasked again. “Did you grab the bitch or not? And she better not be dead. My cousin will not negotiate with the Bianchis if she’s dead,” Emelia said.

Eve looked to Enzo. The look on his face had tears dripping down her cheeks. She knew what it was like to be betrayed by someone you cared for. She wouldn’t wish that type of pain and disappointment on anyone.

“Piccola Em,” Enzo said into the phone, with his eyes still shut.

The other end of the line went silent, except for some road noises. A horn blared from the other end of the phone. Emelia had to be driving or riding in a car. A few seconds ticked by before she finally spoke.

“Enzo?” Emelia whispered.

“Why?” Enzo groaned.

“Why do you have this phone?” Emelia asked.

“Why?” Enzo yelled.

“Enzo...” Emelia whispered, tears in her voice.
