“And you will. You’ll find him. Let’s not start a war in the process. And let’s not burn any bridges with allies.”

“Fuck allies,” Enzo yelled before staring out the window. “Do I look like I give a fuck about allies? If they truly supported us, they would’ve already come forward with information.”

“Maybe they don’t have it.”

“Or maybe they’re waiting to see me fail.”

“Either way, we have to be smart. We have to keep a cool head.”

Enzo didn’t reply. There was no way to make Stefan understand what he was feeling. No one could understand him because no one understood his loss. There was no one who understood his rage and frustration. Most people had at least one parent in their life. The lucky ones had two. Enzo hadn’t had any. All he’d ever had was his grandfather. And now he was gone, and Enzo was supposed to take his place.

No one on this planet understood what he was going through. Enzo closed his eyes. Never had he felt so alone. When they arrived at his home, Enzo opened the car door before Stefan stopped the car. Once the vehicle stopped, Enzo stepped out, ignoring Stefan, who was calling his name. Two of his guards rushed forward to greet him. Enzo strode passed them.

“Enzo,” Stefan called. “You forgot Eve’s bags.”

Shit. Enzo turned around to find Stefan striding his way with the bags.

“Here.”

Enzo took the bags.

“Enzo.”

“What?” Enzo said, already tired of this conversation.

“When we find the person distributing the drugs in our territory, I will grind him up into a powder and make his crew snort him,” Stefan told him.

Stefano had Enzo’s attention.

“Then we’ll use his remains to fill the orders of all the motherfuckers who’d stopped buying from us and started buying from him.”

Enzo liked where this was going.

“By the time we’re done, no one will want to fuck with our territories, and no one will want to go to war with us. Keep your cool until then. You’ll get your revenge. I promise. And we’ll find the betrayer. Sure, the bastard is living well and somewhere gloating for now. But he’s on borrowed time. When we find him, you’ll get a chance to vent all of your frustrations on him. You’ll keep your promise to Don Ermanno. You’ll show them how savage we can be.”

He no longer felt as angry or as alone as he’d felt seconds ago.

“You’re not alone,” Stefan told him, reading his mind again. “I’ve got your back.” Stefan stuck his hand out. “The family and the entire organization has your back. You’re our don. You’re never alone.”

Enzo shook Stefan’s hand. “Thanks, Stefano.”

“You’re welcome. Have fun with your witness.” Smirking, Stefan turned to leave.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Enzo asked.

Stefan didn’t reply.

“Aren’t you supposed to check the house for me before you leave?” Enzo called out.

Stefan stopped and turned around. “Do you want me to?”

“Hell no.” Enzo headed toward his guest house. He didn’t need anyone checking the house for him. With this many guards here, how could anyone get in? He’d only said that to Stefan because he’d needed to get the last word in.

“I’ll be here early in the morning,” Stefan called out. “I’ll call before I come so that I don’t interrupt anything.”

This motherfucker just had to get the last word in. Ignoring him, Enzo entered his home. The first thing he did was search for his Eve.

Her don was ready to see her.
