Chapter Two
Ayawn escaped him.
He couldn’t recall the last time he’d been this tired. The worst day of his life was finally coming to an end. Leaving his grandfather’s office, Enzo closed the door behind him. He stood facing the closed door with his hand still grasping the doorknob. So many memories. He wondered how long it would take before he was able to go back into that office without tearing up.Weeks? Months? Years? Never?
"Enzo," Stefano called to him as he strode down the hallway toward him. "You've forgotten something."
What else did they want him to do tonight? He'd taken care of the coward who'd killed his grandfather. His initiation was complete. He'd laid down the rules for his family members who were against his initiation. What more could be expected of him this night?
"What did I forget?" Enzo asked, massaging his temple. A dull ache had taken up residence in his skull.
"The witness."
Enzo stilled. The motherfucking witness! How had he forgotten that? "Where's the witness now?"
"The witness has been moved to your house as requested and is there waiting to be interrogated by you."
Now that the witness was no longer a secret, Enzo’s home was the safest place for him.
“I might as well get this over with. I was just about to head home anyway,” Enzo said.
"You sure? You look tired. You can talk to the witness tomorrow and rest here tonight. The witness isn’t going anywhere. And the staff here has prepared several rooms for the guests who are staying."
“I’m going home to my own bed. Emelia will stay here this weekend to make sure the guests who’ve chosen to stay for a few days are entertained. I’ll come back tomorrow for some meetings. As for tonight... shit, it’s morning.”
“Precisely.”
“Either way, I’m going home. I’ll have a chat with this witness before bed. Ineedto do it tonight. Especially now that I know there’s a DeLuca behind what happened to my grandfather.”
“I’ve got a feeling things are going to get worse before they get better."
Enzo nodded. "So, do I. Has the witness said anything else since you did your interrogation?"
Stefan shook his head. "Nothing new."
"Maybe I can get the information we need."
"I'll drive you," Stefan offered.
"Aren't you tired? Go home. I can drive myself."
"I'll rest once you're home. I'll call ahead to let the guards and staff know you're coming."
Enzo sighed. "Alright."
Enzo followed Stefan out of the house. The ride to his home was a quiet one. He hadn't even realized he'd drifted off to sleep until he heard a car door slam. He sat up and reached for his weapon. It was just Stefan closing the driver's side door. Enzo opened the passenger door before Stefan could.
"You could've waited a few seconds," Stefan told him.
"I don't have to keep up appearances anymore tonight."
"You still need to get used to me opening the door for you."
