He watched her takea few steps back, heading toward the door.
“Don’t move,” he ordered.
She froze, finally listening to him.
“Answer me,” he ordered.
“I don’t remember the question.”
“You’ve got three seconds.”
“No one sent me,” she said, miraculously remembering the question. “I was brought here against my will. They have a word for that. It’s called kidnapped.”
“I find it strange that you just so happened to be at the scene of my grandfather’s wreck. Maybe it was a coincidence. Maybe not.” He took a step forward.
“It was a coincidence. How could I have known there would be a wreck there?”
“I also find it strange that you damn near burned down my kitchen.”
She swallowed. “I... I forgot to take the fork out of the bowl when I put it in the microwave.”
“Hmm.”
“It was an honest mistake.”
“I don’t think you’re being honest. I damn sure don’t think it was a mistake.” He took another step forward.
“I can’t force you to believe me. All I can do is tell my truth.”
“There’s no truth in you. I wouldn’t be surprised if your name wasn’t even Eve.”
