Damn right!Giorgio’s words calmed him a bit.
“What news did Orto have that was so important, you left our little witness alone to hear it?”
“Sorry, sir. In the chaos, I forgot to relay his message to you. When he was getting ready to change shifts, Ms. Emelia came by looking for you.”
Shit. He’d had a few missed calls from Little Em. He’d been too busy to call her back.
“She’d brought you lunch,” Giorgio continued.
Enzo smiled as he listened to Giorgio. Of course, Em had brought him lunch. She treated him more like her son than her cousin.
“When Orto told her you weren’t home, she told him to deliver a message to you. He told her he wouldn’t be here when you returned. So, she told him to give the message to a different guard. That guard ended up being me.”
“What was the message?”
“Emelia wanted you to know that while you sought out those who’d betrayed the family, she’d take care of things at Avola Manor and here for you.”
Again, she was mothering him. He was okay with her taking care of Avola Manor. But his home was off-limits. He’d already had enough intrusions on his space with the guards and his little witness. He didn’t need Emelia to send more people his way. That would just be more people to interrupt his plans for Eve.
“Giorgio, I thought about putting a bullet in you when I learned you’d let my witness out of your sight.”
“I’m sorry, sir.”
“Since this is your first fuck up, I’ll give you another chance.”
“Thank you, sir. Thank you.”
“You’ve been watching her around the clock. You haven’t had a proper rest. That’s my fault. I want you to take the night off and return in the morning.”
“But, sir, Stefan said...”
“You fucked up, Giorgio. I’ll let it slide because you haven’t had much sleep. Take the night off. Get some sleep. Show up in the morning, ready to work.”
“Sir, who will watch over Eve tonight?”
“Why are you so worried about my witness, Giorgio?”
“I’m not, sir. I...”
“Bring her to me, then go home before I change my mind about that bullet.”
“Yes, sir. Bringing her to you now.”
Enzo ended the call, then placed his phone in the drawer of his nightstand. Soon, he’d be alone with Eve. He’d already ordered the other guards to remain outside, guarding the property. He’d told them they weren’t needed inside. Like Giorgio, they’d tried to protest, spouting the bullshit Stefan had fed them.
“It’s our job to protect the outside and inside of the don’s home,”they’d argued.
If a motherfucker made it past them, then Enzo would handle it. He didn’t need guards in his home. He grabbed his glass and took another sip of wine. His thoughts drifted to how he would go about obtaining the information he needed from Eve. A sliver of guilt tried to thread its way through his heart.
He cut that shit in half, then burned it. He would feel no guilt. She’d brought this on herself.Eve, what a fitting name for her. He would be the serpent who ushered in her downfall. Yet, no matter how upset he was, he knew he wouldn’t handle this the same way he handled other hostages.
However, there were things he could do to make her talk without causing her physical pain. And if she still didn’t talk, well...Knock. Knock. Knock. Enzo placed his glass back on his nightstand and rose from the bed.
Quick strides carried him to the door in no time. He straightened his shirt on his frame before pulling the door open. Giorgio was standing there. Though he couldn’t see all of her, he knew Eve was standing behind him.
Giorgio handed him a set of keys. “Here you go, sir.”
They were the keys to the cuffs. Enzo slid them into his pocket. Giorgio stepped right, no longer shielding his little witness. There she was, his Eve. Why the hell was Giorgio standing so close to her? Giorgio took a step back, distancing himself from Eve.
