Chapter Five

Enzo

––––––––

Though his breakfastwith Eve had put a smile on his face, that smile hadn’t lasted long. It quickly evaporated when Stefan went over the long list of things Enzo needed to do, things that were expected of him.

“Fuck that,” Enzo said from the back seat of his own damn car as he scrolled through messages in his phone. “Take me to my office.”

“Enzo, that won’t be your office for long. Today, you’ll appoint someone to take over your territory.”

“I’ll worry about that later.”

“No more putting it off. You have to do it. The person you appoint will also take over the construction company and manage the real estate properties. Soon, your personal belongings from your old office will be relocated to Tower D.”

Tower D. Tower DeLuca. The impressive building his grandfather had practically designed himself with the help of an architect friend. It was home to many of the main offices of DeLuca-protected businesses. Though the companies were in different cities, some different countries, their head offices were in Tower D. This had been his grandfather’s way of keeping a watchful eye on some of the family-protected businesses.

Because of his grandfather, the DeLucas didn’t have to hide in the shadows as some mafia families did. His grandfather had placed them on a new path. One that kept most of them off the radar of the local authorities and Interpol. Tower D was like a beacon that showed the world that the DeLuca family was a family of legit businessmen.

However, they weren’t a family of saints. Behind the suits and handsome faces hid savages. Behind the legit businesses hid the not-so-legit businesses. Though the DeLucas didn’t have to hide in the shadows, they did thrive in the darkness. Some more than others. Enzo preferred the darkness but was being forced into the light.

Sighing, he stared out the window. Was this how his grandfather felt when he was forced to step into the role of the don? Did he feel like the weight of the world was closing in on him? His grandfather had made being a leader look easy. Enzo hadn’t officially started, and he was already feeling burdened.

Enzo closed his eyes, needing to clear his head for a moment. To his surprise, Eve’s face popped into his mind. He opened his eyes. Why had she drifted into his thoughts? He was trying to embrace a moment of peace, yet, there she was, hijacking his precious moments to himself.

Enzo took a deep breath and released it slowly before closing his eyes again. And again, there she was.Eve. His little witness with the attitude of a fucking giant. It would be easier to ignore her if she wasn’t so damn beautiful. Enzo had never been swayed by beauty. Italy was full of beautiful women.

The only thing that made Eve different was that he needed her momentarily. As soon as he’d gotten what he wanted from her, he’d send her on her way. Just as he thought that, another thought drifted through his mind.

Will you really let her go when you’re done with her?

He would. He should. He had to. He had too much shit to do. The last thing he needed right now was someone like her disturbing his life, his home. Hell, even in his daydreams, she glared at him like she wanted to put a bullet in him. He thought about the stand-off they’d had this morning. Enzo chuckled.

“Are you okay back there?” Stefan asked.

Schooling his face into a serious expression, Enzo opened his eyes. “Do I look okay?”

The corners of Stefan’s lips lifted. “You look like you’re thinking about killing someone. Or, you’re fantasizing about someone you shouldn’t be thinking about.”

Stefan knew him too well.

“Which is it, A or B?” Stefan asked.

“Eyes on the road,” Enzo ordered.

“Yes, sir.” Stefan’s gaze returned to the road.

“And don’t call me sir.”

“Okay, sir.”

“You want me to shoot you, don’t you?” Enzo asked.

Stefan laughed. That was more like it. He didn’t like Stefan being all uptight with him. Enzo knew things had to change. But they were changing too rapidly for his tastes.
