Chapter Three
He handed the deviceback to Stefan.
“You’re right,” Enzo told Eve. “I don’t have to tell you your history. However, reading over your information has helped me understand you better.”
“What has that little bit of information helped you understand?”
“You’re running from something or someone, aren’t you?”
“No.”
Her response was simple. Yet, she wasn’t a simple woman. Her words meant nothing. Enzo focused on her actions. For the briefest moment, a sliver of fear had flickered in her brown gaze.
It was only there for a second. He’d witnessed it before she could put her defensive wall back in place. Eve was indeed running from something. How unlucky was she to run from fire and end up in a lion’s den?
She cocked her head to the side and asked, “Are you just going to stand there staring at me? I told you I’m not running from anything. I’ve answered your questions. Now, can I leave?”
“Your answer to my question was pointless because you lied. Youarerunning from something, bella.”
“My name is Eve.”
Bella Eve. Beautiful Eve.
Enzo cleared his throat and told her, “No one quits their job, gets rid of their home, then starts traveling the world unless they’re running from something.”
She opened her mouth to speak. He spoke up before she could.
“You don’t have to tell me what you’re running from. That’s your business. But my grandfather, that’s my business. And I’m convinced you know more than you’re telling me.”
“I don’t. What do I have to say for you to believe me?”
“You already said he told you something.”
“But I don’t know what he said.”
“Take your time. I’m sure it’ll come back to you.”
