Chapter Nineteen
Two days later
Eve
––––––––
With her hair pulledback into a ponytail, Eve went about her day.
She’d exchanged the sheets on the bed for fresh ones. After this morning’s lovemaking, they were needed. Though she was free to move about the house as she pleased, she still had a guard watching her every move. Enzo said it was for her protection. For now, she’d accept that. After he found out who’d betrayed his family, they would talk about how their relationship would be in the future.
She refused to spend her life locked inside their home, no matter how beautiful it was. But she also wasn’t stupid enough to ignore the threats that awaited her outside their home. For now, she’d accept the way things were. Giorgio stood outside the bedroom door while she changed the sheets. When she went into Enzo’s library to read a book, he followed her, then stood next to one of the bookshelves and stared at the wall.
He spent most of his day standing. Eve felt bad for the guy. Even though she’d told him he could sit down numerous times, he never did. She decided to relocate to the living room to watch television. At least in that room, he wouldn’t have to stare at the wall. When she reached the living area, he stood in the corner of the room, as usual. Yesterday, they’d watched cooking shows all day.
He’d pretended he wasn’t interested in them, but she’d caught him looking. Today, she settled on a horror movie about zombies. Halfway through the show, she noticed he was watching it too. Smiling, she resumed watching the television. After that movie went off, she found an action movie for them to watch. He became engrossed in that one too. So much so that he began to talk during the movie.
“There’s no way that gun has that many bullets in it,” Giorgio complained.
“Right!” Eve agreed. “That looks like a Barrett M82. A civilian shouldn’t even have one of those. But, the Mexican drug cartel was able to get their hands on those military-grade weapons. So, I guess it’s possible. And...”
She went silent when she noticed he was watching her.
“How do you know that?” he asked.
Eve smiled and tried to think of an answer. “My dad was a gun collector,” she lied.
She’d never met her dad. Her mother either. He didn’t know that. With a nod, he resumed watching television. Eve kept her mouth shut during the rest of the movie. At lunchtime, Enzo’s cook arrived to prepare lunch. But the cook wasn’t the only one who showed up. While Maria was preparing lunch, another woman showed up unannounced. Giorgio asked Eve to go into the bedroom when he saw the woman’s car pulling up to the house.
Suspicious of his reaction to the woman, Eve refused to budge. And to think, she’d thought she and Giorgio were bonding. But he was trying to hide her from Enzo’s sidepiece. Or was Eve the sidepiece? Eve couldn’t believe Enzo had asked her to stay with him and, all the while, he’d had another woman. Eve was a lot of things, but she was no man’s second choice.
Fuck the kitchen. He’d be lucky if she didn’t burn the entire house down. Giorgio continued trying to usher her out of the room. But the woman used a key to enter the house before he could force her to the bedroom. This bitch had a key! Eve couldn’t even leave the premises, but this bitch had a key. If Enzo were there now, she’d stab his ass in the right thigh. Both Giorgio and Eve turned to face the newcomer. She was a petite woman. Cute. Eve could see why Enzo would like her.Fucking Enzo. She was going to kill him.
“You must beourlittle witness,” the woman said.
He’d even told the bitch about her. Eve was going to kill him twice.
The woman strode forward. “My name is Emelia DeLuca. Enzo’s cousin.”
Emelia. Where had she heard that name before? Enzo must’ve said it. Or maybe one of the guards. So, she was his cousin, not his bitch. Good. Enzo could live. Smiling, Eve shook the woman’s hand.
“I see my cousin has been treating you...” Emelia stared Eve up and down after releasing her hand.
Emelia had arrived on a day when Eve wasn’t dressed for company. Instead of wearing the clothing Stefan had brought for her, she was wearing some of Enzo’s clothing. Enzo’s clothing was too big. But most of the clothing Stefan had gotten her was too small. Yeah, she was slender. But her ass and hips weren’t. She didn’t blame Stefan. Finding clothing that fit her was hard, no matter what country she was in. At least he’d gotten her the correct hair care products that she could use.
“It seems my cousin is treating you well for a witness,” Emelia finally said.
Not knowing how to reply to that, Eve just smiled. But she hadn’t missed the undertone in the woman’s words. Emelia had just met her, and already the woman disliked her. Since this was Enzo’s cousin, Eve decided to play nice. But she wanted the woman gone as soon as possible.
“It’s nice to meet you, Emelia. I’m sorry, Enzo isn’t here...”
“That’s fine,” Emelia interrupted her. “I’m used to coming and going from his house as I please.”
Oh, really? Well, that was some shit Eve wasn’t going to put up with.
