“Who did this?” Enzo asked.

“He’s dead.”

Enzo gritted his teeth.

“It doesn’t hurt that badly,” Eve assured him.

This would be the last time he took her with him. He didn’t doubt her abilities. Hell, she’d saved his life out there. But he couldn’t handle her being in danger. Neither could he handle seeing her bruised. He wasn’t a weak man. But she made him vulnerable. For him to be strong, she had to be safe.

If he told her to stay home and never leave the house, she’d threaten to burn down the house with him in it. Enzo thought over what he should do as the two of them stepped under the hot spray of water. He slowly bathed her. When he was done, she washed him. He watched her as she scrubbed his shoulders.

“Eve?”

“Yes.”

“If anything happens to you...”

“I know. I know,” she interrupted him. “You’ll burn the city down.”

“No. I’ll lose my mind.”

She stopped and stared up at him. Enzo bent down and kissed her forehead. His lips remained there for a few seconds. The sight of that motherfucker with his gun to her head was on repeat in his mind. Enzo pushed the image away and leaned back.

“Don’t ever leave me,” he told her.

“You’re stuck with me, don Enzo,” she whispered.

“Good.”

Eve resumed scrubbing him.

“I want to give you the world,” he told her.

“I’ll gladly accept the world,” she replied. “But I don’t need it. I only need you.”

“With just me, you’ll get bored. Plus, I know you’re tired of always being in this house.”

“I’m done being cooped up in this house. I can go on missions with you now, right?”

Hell no. “Actually, I’ve got the perfect job for you. You’ll be safe, and you’ll get to keep motherfuckers in line for me.”

“What’s the job?”

“I want you to be the manager of Tower D,” he told her before stepping directly under the spray to rinse off.

Eve grinned. “You just don’t want to manage it yourself.”

“I don’t. But you’ll be good at it. And on your lunch breaks, I can come pick you up and eat you for lunch.”

She chuckled. “Promise?”

“Promise.”

“Hmmm. I think I’d like to manage Tower D. But I’m not a citizen of Ital...”

“I’ll take care of that.”

“You’ve got everything figured out. Huh?”
