His words hang in the air, heavy and twisted, like the smoke he left to poison my lungs. The way he manipulates—the calm arrogance of it—makes my skin crawl. Turns out, planning your own death is a lot like packing for a one-way trip—agonizing over what to leave behind, what to bring, and who will have to sort through the mess you couldn’t be bothered to handle.

And then I see him.
