He jokes and laughs with Allie as he makes his way across the bar to get us drinks, and I head to find us a table. It’s more crowded than usual, but I spot one in the corner by the front window. I’m squeezing through what looks like a bachelorette party when I realize the people look familiar.
“Oh my god! I was hoping I’d see you!” Hanna yells, wrapping her arms around me in a hug I do not want and breathing tequila breath all over my face.
“Hanna,” I say, shaking her off.
“This is so perfect. You’ll get to see everyone. The wedding is tomorrow, and we’re all here!” she yells, though she’s only a few inches from my ear.
Not a bachelorette, then. A rehearsal after-party. Great.
“Do you think Iwantto see everyone?” I ask, not bothering to mask my irritation.
“Oh, no. Maybe not,” she gasps, lifting the hand that’s holding her drink, narrowly avoiding spilling it all over me as she disappears into the crowd.
When I look back at the table I meant to claim, Jared’s sitting there.
Ew.
“It’s good to see you,” he says, making his voice gravelly in a way IthinkI once found sexy. How? Ew.
“It’s good for you to see me,” I agree, turning to walk away.
When he grabs my arm to stop me, I glare at his hand, then into his eyes until he lets go. “What?” I sigh.
“Don’t be like that.” He steps closer, but I don’t back up. I hold my ground. “Why don’t we sneak out of here and have some fun?”
“Ew,” I answer. People always say“If he cheats with you, he’ll cheat on you.”This creep is proof. “Aren’t you married now?” I ask.
“Not till tomorrow morning,” he says, making a face I imagine he thinks is sexy. It’s not, and IknowI never thought it was.“Still have one more night of freedom. How about one more good time together?”
“You and I are operating with vastly different definitions of ‘good time,’” I say, an involuntary shiver running down my spine.
“I think you andIhave the same definition, though,” Cam’s taunting voice says in my ear as he drapes an arm around mywaist from behind, pulling me into his chest. With his other hand, he offers me a yellow tiki drink. “You good?” he asks.
“Just want to do one more thing, then we can be done with this,” I say.
Jared reaches out his hand to introduce himself to Cam. Cam—who could also win a championship for nicest guy on the planet—does the meanest thing I’ve ever seen him do. He keeps his arms tightly around me and says, “I’ll pass.”
My ex scoffs. “You think you’re better than me? You’ve gotmysloppy seconds.”
“Doesn’t count as seconds if you never ate in the first place,” Cam says, and we both have a good laugh at Jared’s expense.
It’s possible I’m being petty, but it’s also possible that I don’t care.
Finding the person I was scanning the crowd for, I yell, “Kelee! Over here!” waving my hand high in the air to get my ex’s fiancée’s attention. Cam lifts his hand and waves too. Luke gives me ahey-quit-yelling-in-my-barlook, and I give him a big smile in return.
Kelee looks a little wary but joins our group, snuggling into a fuming Jared. “Hey, so, no hard feelings, right? 'Cause now you two are so happy,” she smiles hopefully.
I could let her off the hook. She’s getting married tomorrow. Hell, she’s signing up for a lifetime of never getting her pussy licked. She doesn’t need anythingelsebad to happen. But I’m not feeling that nice.
“Actually, yes, hard feelings. What you two did to me was so shitty—likeunbelievablyshitty.” I laugh, a realization dawning. “I think you might be really bad people. I’m grateful now that I’m not stuck with this asshole anymore.” I point at Jared, who starts to protest. For once,Italk overhim. “Butneither of you gets any credit for the life I’ve built since then. And youdefinitelyaren’t part of the love I have with Cam.”
Her mouth drops open.
“That was fucking rude. You’re such a bitch,” Jared says.
“Watch your mouth,” Cam says, still holding onto me. “You will not speak about her ever—”
Jared cuts him off, “I’ll say whatever the fuck I want about that—”
