“I was afraid you were going to say that.”
“You have a better suggestion?”
“We can call the Decorah Security Agency from a pay phone.”
He stopped short. “I don’t know anything about them—except what you’ve told me.”
“They got me into the bunker. And when we were in the cave, you asked what we were supposed to do when we got out? Doesn’t that mean you were willing to ask for their help?”
“Maybe I was. But I’m thinking more clearly now. And as far as I know, they have their own agenda.”
“One of them got killed getting you out of there.”
He had the grace to wince.
“Are you saying you have a different agenda?”
“Right. Now that I’ve got a name, I’m going to contact Colonel Luntz and find out what he knows about that briefing.”
“Is that a good idea?”
“I guess I’ll find out.” He sat down on a fallen log and took off his boot. Reaching inside, he fished out the money he’d taken from Montgomery’s office. After shuffling through the bills, he turned to her.
“Maybe you’d better take this. You can call your friends and get them to pick you up.”
“I’m not leaving you.”
He tipped his head to the side. “And what if I say it’s time to split up?”
