“Sorry.”
He scooted away from her.
“I didn’t mean to complain.” She used the last of her energy to roll toward him, sling her arm over his chest, and press her face to his shoulder.
“We’re safe,” she murmured.
“Let’s hope so.” He cleared his throat. “Those guys in uniform, they’re not regular army, are they?”
“No. They’re from a private military group. Like Blackwater.”
“Montgomery hired them?”
“Not sure.” She couldn’t manage any more conversation. Her eyes were already closed, and she drifted off to sleep.
Sometime later, she was sucked into a dream. It started off with a hazy warmth that heated her all the way to her bones. She and Cash were finally together again—after all the years of separation, and the feeling of relief was like a living thing.
They were both naked, lying in a cozy bed. She clung to him, kissing him deeply, running her hands over his back and shoulders. She wanted to tell him how much she’d missed him. She wanted him to know that her life had been incomplete without him. Before she could speak the words, an enormous wind came pounding at them, dragging them apart.
“Cash?”
He was gone. Panic gripped her as she tried to find him. Then she was running through the woods—wet and cold and searching desperately for him. Only she was being pursued by men in blue uniforms who were determined to keep her from him.
“No,” she moaned.
“Sophia!”
He called her name, but his voice came from a long way away.
One of the men caught up with her and grabbed her, and she tried to fight him off, but he captured her flailing arms and held her still.
She kept fighting with all her strength, because she knew she had to get back to Cash.
His voice reached her again.
“Easy. Take it easy.”
“No.”
“Sophia, wake up.”
Her eyes blinked open, and she looked up into Cash’s face. He was pressing her against the mattress while he held her arms, and she knew that she must have been hitting him.
“Oh Lord, did I hurt you?” she gasped.
“It’s okay.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You were dreaming.”
“Yes.”
They had been naked in the dream, and they were almost naked now. She felt his muscular leg against hers. His hip pressed to her thigh.
But it was obvious his mind wasn’t in the same place as hers.
“We can’t stay here too long. In case they figure out where we are.”
