He made a gurgling sound and went limp.
“Thanks,” Sophia gasped.
“No problem.”
Before they could exchange any information, a loud bell began to sound.
Cash looked up, his eyes narrowed. “How do we get out of here?”
“Through the storeroom where you were this morning.” He helped her up, and she swayed on her feet. Looking wildly around, she expected to see armed men coming at them from both ends of the corridor. But so far it was clear.
“Did I hear you scream?”
She blinked at him. “Yes.”
“What happened?”
“I couldn’t come get you.”
“But— “
“We’ll talk about it later.”
“How did you know I was in there?”
She pulled out the GPS and showed him the blip that indicated where he was. Then she pressed her hand against her forehead, trying to orient herself. “I don’t remember how to get there from here,” she admitted. “Do you?”
“I hope so.”
He didn’t have to urge her to hurry. They sprinted down the corridor, then into a cross passage and down a flight of stairs.
Cash was limping badly by the time they were in sight of the storeroom. Worse, the corridor was suddenly full of uniformed men—rushing toward them from both directions, as she’d feared.
She opened the storeroom door and flung herself inside. As soon as Cash was through the door, she turned and locked it, thinking that it wouldn’t hold the guards off for long.
“This way.”
Behind them, fists pounded on the door. When it didn’t open, she heard bullets tearing into the metal.
Behind her Cash swore. “They’ll get in. We’re trapped.”
“Keep going. Behind the shelves”
She led him toward the rear of the room, then behind the shelving where the exit was located.
Behind them, the storeroom door burst open, and guards poured in. “Halt.”
Ignoring them, Sophia kept running. But one of the pursuers saw Cash as he followed her behind the shelves.
“Over there.”
Guards rushed after him.
“Hurry,” Sophia shouted.
Ignoring her, Cash turned and pushed at the shelves. At first, they didn’t move. But as he kept pushing, they rocked on their base. He gave a mighty heave, and they tumbled forward, hitting several men on the way down and blocking the others.
Cash turned and dashed after Sophia, through the opening and into the stone tunnel.
