“So you can change your mind?” His voice sounded unnaturally high and strained.

I walked over to his side of the bed and kissed him. He slid his fingers into my hair and took over the kiss.

“Come back to bed.”

Damn, maybe kissing him had been a bad idea. I wanted to climb onto his lap. Instead, I pressed a final kiss to his lips. “The truth is, I like being with you. It’s been a while since I’ve felt this way. I won’t change my mind just because we sleep in two separate beds.”

He seemed better with those words and didn’t try to prevent me from leaving again. I dressed quickly and whistled for Zeus to join me. He looked way too comfortable in Gunner’s bed.

“You’ll drop him off tomorrow?” Gunner asked as he walked me out.

“You want him again?”

“Sure. He’s got a big yard to play in here, and I don’t want you seeing that Asher guy.”

I groaned. “He’s my neighbor and actually quite nice.”

“I don’t care. He wants you.” His hand landed on my ass. “He can’t have you.”

“You’re being unreasonable.”

“I know.”

Just I know? No promise to change? I sighed. We had our work cut out for us.

“I’ll drop Zeus off on the way to work,” I said. “But if he becomes a bother, let me know.”

“He won’t.”

“Gunner—”

“Benjamin—”

I elbowed him in the stomach. “You can just call me Ben.”

“I’ll call you what I want.”

I shook my head. There was no reasoning with him sometimes. Same old Gunner, but I wasn’t irritated at all. In fact, walking along the hall with him next to me felt fantastic.

My man.

Mine.

Gorgeous.

Badass.

Was this man really mine?

Loud music and chatting came from the mess hall, but we didn’t stop, thankfully. By now, they all knew I was here. I was too tired to face more of them like that asshole Tango.

“Don’t worry about them,” Gunner said. “They’ll keep their mouths shut.”

“That helps.” His words drifted back to me as we walked out of the clubhouse, Zeus between us. His former partner had jerked him around and kept him a secret the way Mason had done me. Now that the shoe was on the other foot, I understood more of what Mason had been dealing with at the time. Except us being together wouldn’t have had the same impact as me being with Gunner.

“Did you find anything useful today?” Gunner asked as I opened the car door for Zeus to get in.

“Not much. Just that the people the convict had sold her baby to might have released her from prison, which means someone there must still be in on the job.”
