Chapter Thirteen

Cain paced back and forth across his office and checked in with the sheriff to see if they had anything.

“Cain, I told you I’d call you immediately. You’re making yourself sick. Have you even slept in the last three days?” Daniel asked.

“A little.” He didn’t want to say it was only when his body gave out, and he usually just put his head down. He wouldn’t be able to eat or sleep until he had Eden back where she belonged.

“Thank you, Daniel.”

“No problem. Get some rest. We’ll find her.”

Cain pinched the bridge of his nose. “All right.” He set his phone to the side and walked to the window. He didn’t see the rolling hills speckled with horses and cows. His mind was on how he could have fucked this up so badly.

After thinking about it and talking to a few people, he could see why she thought it was a summer fling. The only reason she hadn’t been in his house was that he knew he’d never let her leave, and he didn’t know if she was ready for that.

They’d only known each other for three weeks. It felt like he’d known her his whole life. She fit every part of him, and unless she hated the idea, she would move in with him and stay. He already had the ring in his pocket. It was his grandmother’s, and it was very pretty, with a two-carat diamond and a smaller one on the sides.

His phone rang, and he hurried to answer. When he saw it was one of her daughters, his heart felt like it would burst from his chest. Please don’t let it be bad news.

“Hello,” he answered.

“Hey, it’s Madison. I talked to Mom.”

“How is she? Where is she? I need to get to her now.”

“I know. She didn’t tell me where she was. I do know shehasn’t left your area. She couldn’t go on her flight because she was sick.”

“How sick and with what?” he asked.

“She says it’s a cold, but it sounds like she’s really struggling,” Madison said.

He could hear the desperation in the young woman’s tone. “We’ll find her, Madison. And when I do, after she’s better, I’m going to need to spank her.”

Madison gasped. “Good luck with that.”

“I have ways. I’m going to call the hotels again. Maybe someone will talk. I’ll call you back when I know anything.”

“Same here.”

The first thing he did was call her number again. She probably had fifty texts and voicemails from him, but until he heard her voice, he wouldn’t be able to stop. By the fourth ring, he was ready to throw his phone against the wall or put his fist through it.

“Hello.”

It took him a moment to realize it was Eden.

“Hi…” He cleared his throat. “Hi, Sweetheart. Where are you?”

She paused. “I just wanted to tell you everything’s good. Madison said you were worried. I’m sorry. Now you know everything’s okay. I’ll be out of the area in the next few days.”

He gritted his teeth so hard he thought he’d break some of them. “Sweetheart, we have a lot to talk about. You’re thinking we’re not together, and that’s farthest from the truth. I know it’s my fault because I said or did some things wrong, but I never expected or wanted you to leave me.”

She was quiet for a moment. “Listen, Cain. You pretty much said I was leaving, and then, the last few days together, you were pushing me away. I am not your responsibility. You don’t have to pretend you want me.”

“Not want you?” Fuck. He felt like he’d jump out of his skin if he didn’t find her. “I’ll admit that the last few days you were on the ranch were rough.”

“I understand…”

“Little Sub, no more interruptions. I’m only going to warn you once before I start adding to your punishments.”
