CHAPTER ONE

FLORA

Harper’s wordsecho around my head.

“Hey, hey. Eyes on me. You’ve got this, I promise.”

I’m losing my head over this. I have been up the past two nights petrified that I am going to fuck this up for Travis, and for me.

Rolling out of bed, I hastily move to the kitchen. My eyes are dry, and with each blink I find it harder to keep them open.

Travis spins around and gives me a smile.

“Still not sleeping?” I shake my head. “I’ll be working late tonight, loads to do, plus now you’re Edward’s nanny… well, he will definitely up my work load,” he gives a shrug of his shoulders.

Travis is a workaholic, but it’s got worse over the last six months. I kept thinking he was having an affair at work, but after a lot of reassuring, it turns out that Edward is delegating a lot more than he used to.

Edward is a widow, but by what I have heard, their relationship wasjusta business transaction, nothing more to it. But a child still lost their mum.

Whether it was business or not, it is still heartbreaking.

Travis slips me from my thoughts as he places a kiss on my forehead. “See you in the morning,” he gives a wide smile and disappears out of our apartment.

This has become the new normal for us. By the time he is home, I am fast asleep.

I don’t like it, but he has made it very clear that work will always come before me and our relationship.

Our sex is scheduled around his work calendar, it can never be spontaneous, I never feeldesired.

It’s just sex.

A tick off a never-ending to do list for Travis.

Sighing, I pop the kettle on and wait for it to boil. I needed coffee and a lot of it.

Today was the day I was meeting my new boss and I was dreading it.

Dressed in black yoga leggings,a white vest and a black zip up yoga jacket, I slipped my feet into my trainers. I wanted to be comfortable.

Edward’s little girl is nearly four. Old enough to talk, young enough to still want me to do everything with her.

Brushing my fingers through the ends of my dirty blonde hair, I inhale sharply.

Swiping my phone and bag off the hook by the front door, I make my way to the elevator and onto the pavement where Edward’s driver is waiting for me.

A blacked out town car sits kerbside. Nerves bubble inside of me.

I needed to remember that this is temporary. He only wants me for eight weeks whilst his usual nanny is dealing with a family bereavement.

Travis has always said how hard-faced and cold-hearted Edward is, which makes me even more anxious to work there.

“Miss,” the smartly dressed driver appears and opens my door. He must be in his thirties maybe, with dark hair and eyes.

“Thank you,” I whisper because for some reason, my voice has disappeared.

Nodding, I duck and slip into the back of the luxurious car and swallow down the nerves. My phone pings in my bag and I reach inside for it, it’s the girls and I smile softly.
