He gives a reassuring nod to Seraphina and then to me. I give him a terse nod in return when we get to the guard box, only to find a lifeless body slumped over the window.
“Shit,” Seth curses as he lifts the limp head up. “It’s Jeremy. Fuck, that sucks.”
That does suck. Jeremy joined the family with us years ago, he was our age from a rough side of town. He was a great solider and a pretty damn good friend. Seraphina squeezes my hand tightly and I squeeze hers in what I hope is a comforting gesture.
My gaze traces over the driveway, taking advantage of the cover we have for now. I see two of our SUV’s and 3 bikes that I am sure belong to the Vipers. That isn’t so bad. It almost makes me wonder why my father and Luca haven’t been able to take them down yet. But then I remember what is at stake. One wrong move and someone could die. Someone like little Emilio, or one of my sisters, or my mom or…the list goes on.
“So, 3 Vipers and then the Ferguson’s, I like those odds,” Drew says.
“Yeah,” Seth agrees from the front. He doesn’t move for a moment before he lets out a rough breath. Suddenly, he turns to face Drew and does a quick 1,2 shot to his stomach.
Seraphina screams before hiding behind me while Drew drops his gun and grips his stomach as the blood begins to pour out of him. The look of shock is wide, his eyes like saucers as he slumps to his knees and then to his back.
My gun is already aimed at Seth who isn’t even paying attention to me, instead, he stands there unmoving, watching his best friend slowly bleed out from the bullets out ofhisgun.
“What the FUCK!” I bark as I take a step closer.
“That’s close enough,” he says emotionlessly before he finally drags his eyes up from a dying Drew to me.
In one instant, I am shook to my core as I stare into the eyes of one of my best friends, a best friend that I have known for over 10 years. Only I don’t see him. Where my best friend was always light, jovial and honestly obnoxious, this man in front of me is nothing like him.
Instead of a bright blue that the girls always went nuts for, his eyes are almost black. His normally mischievous smile is gone and an expression devoid of emotion takes its place. He looks like a complete stranger, one that I have no idea what exactly he is capable of.
“Put the gun down, Alessandro.”
“What? Fuck that. What the hell is going on? Why would you shoot Drew?”
“I don’t have a choice. I’m sorry, man.”
“Bullshit. What do they have on you? What could they have possibly done that would make you turn on us? Your family?”
“They have my girl.”
“What girl?” I ask with a scowl.
“You don’t know her. I’ve tried to keep her away from all of this, from everything. It didn’t work though. They took her two days ago, they are torturing her. They told me if I helped them then they would let her go.”
“And you believe them?” I ask. There is no way that he can be this stupid.
“No,” he says, a humorless laugh coating his words. “But I can’t do nothing. I love her.”
Rage and disappointment flow through me and my finger twitches on the trigger. I should gun this piece of shit down right here, right now. But I hesitate, and it is just the opening he needs. He smacks my gun to the side as he delivers a kick to my ribs. It sends me stumbling back a few steps and before I can right myself. I turn and am ready to shoot him when I freeze.
Seth has his gun pressed against Seraphina’s head, a remorseful but serious look on his face. Seraphina’s eyes are wide with terror as tears begin to fall freely down her porcelain cheeks. I look at her and try to convey that everything is going to be okay, even though I have no business promising shit that I can’t know for sure right now.
“Drop the gun. Empty your pockets,” Seth says sternly.
Gritting my teeth, I do as I am told. My eyes flick down to a bleeding Drew. His eyes are still open as he watches everything unfolding in front of him, which is a good sign, but the amount of blood pooling around him doesn’t do much to ease my worries. He is going to die. At the hands of one of his best friends, no less. He looks at me with a hint of fear but mainly resolve. His eyes urge me to go on, to fight, to save Seraphina. I nod softly before facing Seth.
“Walk.”
Slowly, I start walking. I hear Seraphina whimper before they follow. I close my eyes, forcing myself to not turn around. I can’t risk him accidently or purposefully shooting her if I try anything.Shit. I don’t like these odds much anymore.
Chapter Thirty
Seraphina
I can’t believe it. How is this even happening right now? I risk a glance behind us as we make our way up to the front door, making eye contact with Drew when I do. There is so much blood but looking at his face you wouldn’t know it. He doesn’t look weak or even hurt, he looks fucking pissed.
