“Not always,” she says with a sad smile.
I grip her chin and tilt her face up to me. “Always. Just because you didn’t see me, didn’t mean that I wasn’t there. I am just very good at what I do.”
Her beautiful eyes look up to me, so many questions in them. A lot of the questions that I have been asking myself over the last 5 days. Some I don’t quite know how to answer yet, so instead, I kiss her leisurely. I lose myself in the feeling of her lips on mine until the water turns cold.
Begrudgingly, I pull my lips away from hers before I turn the water off and reach out for a towel. I wrap it around her tightly before grabbing one of my own. We dry off before stepping out and walking into my bedroom. I sift through my clothes to find something that won’t totally drown her since our clothes smell like smoke and a 100-year-old mine. I settle on a pair of sweatpants that she can tighten and the smallest t-shirt that I can find.
I hand them to her before I look through my closet and settle for a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt for me. We both get dressed quickly and walk out to the living room to find Seth playing COD on the couch. He doesn’t even look away from the screen as he speaks to us.
“Nice shower?”
I grit my teeth, ready to beat his smart ass into a pulp when the door opens. Drew rushes inside, his frantic eyes tracing over me then Seraphina, almost like he is trying to make sure that we are actually here.
“Fuck. Don’t ever do that to me again,” he grumbles as he tosses a bag on the kitchen counter and comes over to me, gives me a quick hug.
I wrap my arms around him before he pulls away. Drew wastes no time in moving to Seraphina, cupping her face in his hands as his eyes rake over her like he is looking for injuries. He leans down and wraps his arms around her tightly, bending his head down to whisper in her ear softly but not soft enough so that I don’t hear him.
“I thought I lost you, little flame.”
My eyes narrow into slits as he continues holding her for much longer than I would prefer. Out of all of my friends, they have always been the closest. Over the years every time that I was a dick to Seraphina, it was always Drew who would scold me, always coming to her rescue.
For the longest time I thought that he had a thing for her, but I always pushed it aside, chalking it up to him being a good friend to her when I wasn’t. As the seconds pass by and his grip seems to tighten while he takes seemingly shaky breaths into her hair like he is trying to ground himself with her presence, I begin to wonder that maybe my initial suspicion wasn’t too far off base.
“I can’t imagine a world without you in it,” he breathes out roughly as he squeezes his eyes shut tightly while she rubs soothing circles on his back and shushes him softly.
I can’t take it anymore. I give his shoulder a rough push so that he will get the fuck off my girl. He unbinds his arms from around her waist and takes a step back. I waste no time in claiming what’s mine as I drag her body into my side. My eyes are hard on his and the meaning is plain as day.
Mine.
His eyebrows raise as his eyes flick between us in question before settling back on me. I give a terse nod before pressing a kiss to the side of Seraphina’s head. A barely there smile slips across Drew’s face before he nods.
“I can’t believe you guys are actually alive. The Boss thinks you guys are dead. Everyone does. Shit. Have you called him? He is devastated,” Drew says as he pulls out his phone.
I quickly snatch it out of his hand and shake my head. “He knows that we are okay. But no one else outside of him and the people in this room know, and it needs to stay that way.”
Drew nods seriously as Seth pauses the game and turns around to look at us.
“So? You going to tell us what the fuck is going on then?”
Chapter Twenty Eight
Seraphina
After Alessandro told the guys everything that we have been through since Thursday, they were shocked. Apparently, all that most of the men had heard was that someone broke in and that we got out just in time and were with everyone else. No one else knew that we were on the run on our own. No one knew that this was so much bigger than a one-time attack.
“So, this is all the doing of that rich prick?” Drew practically seethes between clenched teeth.
His fists are in tight balls, and he looks ready to blow any second now. I’ve never seen him so riled up before. He is usually so composed and guarded. He obviously took the news of our deaths hard. The look of pure relief he gave when he saw that Alessandro and I weren’t dead, that we were very much alive right in front of him, warmed my heart.
“Yes,” Alessandro says fiercely. “Though I know neither of you are dumb enough to think that he is working on his own. His parents have to be in on it, hell, they are probably running the damn show.
“What the hell are they doing getting in bed with the Vipers?” Seth asks with a puzzled look on his face.
Alessandro shrugs. “Same thing they were doing getting in bed with the Mariano’s.”
“Trying to,” I scoff and roll my eyes.
I see Seth trying to smother a laugh as Alessandro and Drew shoot him a murderous look.
