Setting down my phone, I walk out of my room and down the hall when I stop in my tracks. Sniffing the air, I immediately wrinkle my nose when I smell an overpowering smell coming from Mateo’s room. I knock twice, since I learned my lesson the hard way when Antonio was 13 to always knock, before I step inside.
Mateo is standing in front of the mirror, styling his hair as he goes back and forth between popping the collar of his dress shirt up or leaving it down while Antonio is sitting on the bed, scrolling through his phone. I chuckle as I shake my head at Mateo.
“What are you doing?”
He glances over to me for a second before looking back at the mirror. “Just getting ready for dinner.”
“Mhmm. Any reason why you are wearing 2 gallons of cologne for our weekly family dinner?”
Mateo shrugs as he finally decides on leaving his collar popped before he faces me. I roll my eyes before reaching over and flipping the collar down.
“You aren’t Fabio, keep it down.”
He shrugs again as I begin fixing his hair. It currently looks like he has bad bedhead instead of a casual tousle which I assume is what he was going for.
“So. Which Cordova twin are you getting all dolled up for? Eva or Emilia?”
Antonio looks up from his screen and gives me a devilish smirk. “Who says he is just going after one of them?”
My eyes widen as I look between Antonio and a smirking Mateo. I scoff before smacking his arm.
“Don’t be a douche. If you hurt either of them the whole Family will be after you.”
“How am I supposed to choose? They are both so beautiful,” Mateo asks.
“They are twins,” I deadpan.
“Exactly. Double the fun.”
“Oh my gosh. I did not just hear my 12-year-old brother say that. Nope, I am out of here.”
“Don’t be so judgy,” Antonio says, kicking out his leg to block the way to the door. “Help the kid out. You spend a lot of time with the girls. Give him some tips.”
I cross my arms and shake my head. “Why the hell would I do that? So that I can help him break those poor girls’ hearts? No thanks.”
“Not every guy is hell bent on breaking hearts, you know?” Antonio says with a pointed look.
“Maybe not but it happens more often than not. They are sisters, family. He can’t just toy with them.”
“Why are you acting like I am not right here?” Mateo asks with a frown. “I like them. Both of them and I would never hurt either of them.”
My brows draw in as I remember someone once telling me that they would never let me fall. That they would never let me get hurt.
“Never say never,” I mumble under my breath.
Mateo looks almost hurt by my words while Antonio narrows his eyes at me. I shake my head at them and turn on my heel, wanting none of whatever they are going to try to cook up that will eventually hurt the Cordova girls. As I am in the hallway heading to my room, a hand catches my elbow.
I look back to see Antonio holding on to me, looking down at me with a serious expression.
“What?” I ask.
He stays silent for a few moments before he speaks. “Mateo has a good head on his shoulders, and he genuinely likes the girls. Don’t project your past shit onto him.”
“What are you even talking about?”
“You know exactly what I am talking about. Alessandro hurt you, everyone knows it. I thought you were long over it though. Considering you and Aiden have been together for so long,” he says with a questioning eyebrow.
My eyes widen and I shake my head. “What? Alessandro? Of course, I am over it. There was nothing to even get over. We were just friends until we weren’t. End of story.”
