I freeze for a moment. Doing my best to come up with an answer that will please him best, but my hesitation is too long. Aiden knows my answer. He can see it all over my face. A wall slams down over Aiden’s face before he winds back his hand and slaps me across the face. I yelp in shock as pain begins to radiate across my cheek.

I hear several growls and harsh Italian words coming from the other side of the room. Too many to know who said what. As if I am a piece of gum that he is scraping off the bottom of his shoe, Aiden takes a step away from me, straightening his perfectly tailored suit before walking back to the other side of the room.

“Can we get on with this? I got shit to do,” the guy next to Governor Ferguson draws with a bored expression.

“Very well. Luca, where are the documents?” Governor Ferguson says, diplomatic as ever.

“Why would I give them to you? It is the only thing keeping you from killing me and my family right here, right now.”

“Delaying the inevitable is only drawing out all of your deaths. Don’t you just want this over already? For your children?”

My father’s eyes blaze with such fury, it shakes me to my core. It doesn’t matter that he is sitting in the corner, his hands and feet tied together, he is still the most intimidating man in the room.

The Governor sighs dramatically. “I really wished it wouldn’t have come to this, but it appears that you need a little motivation.”

His slimy eyes float around the room before they land on me. Fear clenches me deep and my breathing stalls.

“Mr. Gomez, I believe extracting information is your area of expertise,” he says to the man next to him before gesturing towards me. My eyes glance over to Bethany, begging for help but she only turns her nose up and looks away.

Bitch.

The mans bored look slides off as a new interested one comes to light. His eyes trace over me from head to toe before settling on my breasts. He licks his lips as he begins to stride towards me.

“No,” I say as I begin to thrash against Seth. “Please,” I beg as I look him in the eye. He is a good guy who made a wrong choice. He can’t seriously just stand here and allow this man to do…whatever the hell his sick mind is clearing thinking.

The look Seth gives me is one of confliction. He closes his eyes and turns away, basically offering me up just like that.

“Aiden! Please!” I beg, trying to appeal to anyone’s humanity as this monster of a man stalks towards me.

Just like his mother though, he turns away, gritting his jaw tightly like he doesn’t like the situation but won’t do anything to stop it. I fight hard. Doing my best to kick, punch and bite Seth so that I can get free. The noises that I make must be enough to rouse Alessandro from his semi-conscious state. I look past the man heading for me and see Alessandro look around the room slowly, his eyes taking inventory of everyone before they settle on me. His eyes bounce back and forth between the man and me before they turn to the size of saucers.

“Don’t fucking touch her!” Alessandro and my father both shout simultaneously.

Governor Ferguson smiles. “I believe we struck a nerve. Where are they, or I can’t be held responsible for the unsavory plans my friend here has for your beloved daughter.”

A million things pass over my father’s face, but he keeps his mouth tightly shut. I get what he is doing, playing the long game. Waiting to give in until it is absolutely crucial. At least that is what I hope is happening. All I know is that I seriously have never been so scared in my entire life.

In one move, the man wraps his arm around my waist and hauls me out of Seth’s grip and into his. My stomach rolls as he leans down and buries his face into my hair, inhaling deeply.

“A little masculine smelling, but I guess you will do,” he chuckles lowly.

I yank away from him quickly, desperately trying to get free. This only seems to piss him off though as he wraps his hand around my throat and rears back, punching me across the face so hard that I see stars. In the background, I hear an animalistic roar. If I wasn’t so sure that it would be impossible, I would say that a bear has just broken into our home.

Blinking through the watery tears clouding my vision, I look around the man to see Alessandro fighting the two men holding him, frantically, viciously. Trying to get to me. He gets the advantage and is able to break free for a few steps until one of the guys pulls a gun.

My heart stops for 3 long seconds. Alessandro doesn’t know that he has a gun on him. 1 second. His eyes are wide and desperate as he runs to me. 2 seconds. He won’t make it though, and I can’t help him. 3 seconds.Bang.

A shot rips through his shoulder and embeds itself into the cream-colored wall near my head. I watch in open mouthed horror as a dark wet spot begins to bloom against his t-shirt. He stands there, not moving for a moment when the guy goes to shoot again. Before he can though, Antonio kicks his bound feet at the shooters leg, snapping it in half just below the knee. The man falls painfully to the ground and from there, it is an all-out battle.

Bethany, tries and fails to shoot my mother and Aunt Tasha who rush her. Evidently their legs were either not tied or they were already able to undo them. Their wrists are bound but that doesn’t stop them from beating the ever loving shit out of a woman who 24 hours ago they called their best friend.

Antonio and Giovanni are working together, fighting to get free from their restraints while fighting off the two Vipers that were holding Alessandro. Mateo is standing in front of the twins and Emilio protectively in the corner, knowing it is best to stay out of the fight if they can help it.

My father is next to Alessandro in a flash, checking his wound quickly before helping him to his feet. They both charge the man holding me, my father tackling him like a professional football player while Alessandro yanks me out of the man’s grasp. We fall to the ground, and I land on top of him. He lets out a pained grunt as I see that I have just landed on his wounded shoulder. Shit.

I scramble off of him as I look at my surroundings. Antonio and Gio are now free, but they have their work cut out for them between the two men. I hear several loud pops coming from all directions, hopefully signaling that we are taking the advantage. There are two more people that we forgot about though.

Tearing my eyes away from Alessandro, I look up to see Governor Ferguson raise a gun to my head. All I can do is freeze. This is it. This is how I die. Squeezing my eyes shut, I wait for the inevitable pain to come but instead I hear heavy footsteps in front of me. My eyes spring open in time to see a body fly in front of me, absorbing the bullet intended for my head. I watch with startled eyes as Seth lays in front of me, lifeless and bleeding profusely.
