“Fine. But you stick to me like glue. If any one of us tells you to duck, you duck, if we tell you to run, you leave us all for dead and get the fuck out of there. Do you understand?”
I nod, though I am in no way agreeing to that. I would never save myself and leave Alessandro behind. I’d rather die. Maybe I will die. If I do at least I know that I died trying to save the people that I love.
“Let’s go,” Alessandro says, gripping my hand tightly as he drags me out the door, Seth and Drew hot on our heels.
We all pile into one of the familiar black SUV’s that I practically grew up in. Driving in complete silence, we stop at a storage unit a few minutes away. We pull the car directly up to it and Drew hops out of the driver’s seat and opens the door quickly. My mouth hangs open at what is inside.
Guns, knives, ammo and…are those grenades? What the fuck?
The guys all get out and begin loading the SUV up with as much ammo and weapons as they can possibly carry. Alessandro hands me a gun that looks like it is out of an action movie and quickly shows me how to load and shoot it. When I nod my understanding, he goes back to loading the vehicle with supplies alongside Drew and Seth.
In less than 3 minutes we are locking up the storage unit and are on our way. A deep sickening feeling sinks into the pit of my stomach. I can’t help but fear what is to come. I don’t know what is going to happen, nothing good, I am sure.
Fear claws at me that we may not live to see another day, that we may never see our family again, that we may already be too late. I can’t think like that though. I have to focus. I have always been the Princess of the Mariano Family, the one that needed someone to protect me. Now it is my turn to do the protecting.
Chapter Twenty Nine
Alessandro
Seraphina’s knee is bouncing like a jack rabbit. A tell-tale sign that she is scared out of her fucking mind. Anytime she is mildly concerned she becomes a jittery mess, with the way that her knee is bouncing around I wouldn’t be surprised if the damn thing broke off.
“You don’t have to come, Bella. We can find a safe place for you to hide. I will come get you when it is over.”
She looks to me and shakes her head. “I’m not scared for me. I am scared for you. For everyone. I-I can’t live in a world without you in it, without them in it,” she says as tears begin to prick her eyes.
“Hey. I am not going anywhere, and neither are our families, and you are sure as fuck going nowhere. Just think about how many times I am going to make you scream my name on our vacation when this is over,” I whisper lowly into her ear.
She shivers at my words as her lust filled eyes look at me. If we weren’t about to storm the proverbial gates in order to save our families, I would take her in this car right now, my friends be damned. But we have much bigger things to focus on, for now.
I reach over and squeeze her thigh tightly as my eyes stay trained out the window. As we get closer to the Mariano home, the air in the car shifts. It isn’t just Seraphina that is nervous now. Drew’s arms are stiff on the wheel as he navigates the road and Seth won’t stop messing with his gun. He has probably reloaded that clip 20 times just since we have been in the car.
We all know that we may not make it out of this alive, but it is part of the job. We all knew what we were vowing when we joined the family. Well, except Seraphina, but the pain in the ass insisted on coming and as much as I hate her being in the middle of danger like this, she is right that there is no better place for her than right next to me. I will slaughter every single person on this earth if that is what it takes to keep her safe, and I will do it with a smile on my face.
Drew pulls the car over a half a block away from the house, just in case. We all slide out of the car and head to the back, filling our pockets with guns, ammo, hell, even a few smoke grenades. Never know when you may need a distraction or a quick getaway.
Seraphina hovers inches behind me. Every time I move, so does she. I turn around to face her and wrap the bullet proof vest that I swiped around her. I begin to load the pockets with everything I can get my hands on, hoping that it will be enough to keep her safe.
Once she is as loaded down with weapons and protection as possible, I pull her into my arms.
“You ready?” I whisper into her ear.
“Is it okay if I say no?”
“Yes.”
She pulls back, her brilliant blue eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
“I’ll never let you fall, Bella. Trust me.”
She bites her lip and nods before leaning up onto her toes and placing a chaste kiss against my lips. As much as I want to deepen it, to get lost in her for hours and not have to let her witness the horrors that she is about to, I know that we don’t have that option. I pull away and press a quick kiss to her temple before I turn to the guys. Both looking at me readily, waiting to follow me into the pits of hell if needed, it’s a good thing, because that is where we may end up when all is said and done.
We walk the distance from the car to the driveway, all of us like swiveling bobble heads ready for the first man to make their appearance. Seraphina is perfectly tucked in the middle of us gripping the gun in her hand like her life depends on it, because it will. Seth is in front, Drew close behind him with Seraphina practically on his heels as I take up the rear, not leaving more than a few inches between us.
“When will back up be here?” I ask softly.
“Benjamin was rounding people up when we were back at the apartment. Shouldn’t be long,” Seth says as he holds his gun just in front of him, ready for his first target.
“Good,” Drew says as he flicks a glance back at us.
