“What? It’s kinda funny. That douche acted like he had total game, clearly not enough if he couldn’t-”
“Seth, I swear to god I will beat you bloody if you finish that fucking sentence,” Alessandro promises lowly.
He shoots his hands up in surrender with that permanent mischievous grin on his face like always.
“Alright, so what is the plan?” Drew asks, serious as ever, like usual.
“For now, we are going to lay low here. The more people that think that we are dead, the better. Maybe we can get the jump before they pull whatever the hell they have planned next.”
“Sounds good. Does someone want to play with me?” Seth asks, holding his controller up.
“Holy fuck, Seth. Can you take this seriously, just for 5 fucking minutes?” Drew barks.
He shrugs good naturedly. “You guys are bringing me down. I already shed my tears over your deaths, and now you aren’t dead, so I am moving on to more important things like whooping the Princess’s butt in COD.”
Alessandro and Drew shake their heads at him as I walk over to the couch. I never could turn down a challenge.
“Stakes?” I ask as I take the spare controller.
“Loser gets naked,” Seth says as he waggles his brows.
Alessandro is a blur before his fist connects with Seth’s jaw.
“Don’t be a fucking asshole!” He shouts.
Seth cradles his jaw for a moment before he rolls his eyes. “Fuck. I was just joking.”
“Thank god for that. That sounded like a lose-lose for me,” I say.
Alessandro and Drew chuckle as Seth pouts like a 5-year-old while he starts the game. I hear Alessandro and Drew murmuring behind us. They are too far away to hear them fully, so I try to focus on beating Seth at this stupid video game instead. Maybe if I focus on something that isn’t real life for just a minute, things won’t seem so out of control.
After several rounds of me beating Seth’s ass, I toss the controller on to the table before I move into the kitchen, slipping into Alessandro’s lap as he talks to Drew. He wraps his arms around me and places a gentle kiss to my shoulder.
Drew looks between us and looks like he is about to say something when Drew’s phone rings. All of us still for a moment before Seth turns off the TV and strides over towards us. Drew looks at the screen before passing it to Alessandro. The contact display says it is my father but…you never know.
Alessandro hits accept, putting it on speaker but staying silent. For a moment, I almost think it is a pocket dial since there is nothing on the other end. Then, voices begin to filter through.
“What the hell do you think you are doing, Nicholas?” My father’s voice rumbles.
“Protecting my interests, Luca. Surely you understand.”
“No, I don’t think that I do. You take me and my family, my underboss and his family, and are what? Kidnapping us? Holding us captive?”
“If we don’t kill you first,” I hear Aiden chime in. I can practically see his slimy smile from here.
Shame washes over me thinking about how I never saw through him. I spent two years with a man that I didn’t know the first thing about. How freaking naïve can one person be? I was so focused on blocking out the pain from the gaping hole that Alessandro left in my life that I didn’t even question the man that slipped right into place.
“Now, now,” Governor Ferguson chides. “Let’s hope it doesn’t get to that. I would still like to maintain our relationship, Luca. I would appreciate your continued support and I am sure you would appreciate my continued business.”
“And you think the best way to do that is killing my daughter? My baby? You will be lucky if I decide to kill you quickly instead of bleeding you dry, drop by drop.”
The vicious tone that my father holds is amazingly convincing. If I didn’t know that I was alive, I would believe him. Screw the Mafia, my father could be big in Hollywood.
“Ah. I am afraid that was just a bit of collateral damage. The Vipers had strict instruction to not harm Seraphina, only to kill the boy.”
“My SON!” Uncle Gio roars.
I hear a scuffle through the phone and lean in closer, like if I do, I will be able to see what is happening.
