“How are you doing?”

I look around almost awkwardly before standing up and crossing the room. “Fine. What do you want?”

“What do you mean? I just wanted to check in on you. Is everything okay? You sound off.”

“Aiden. Do you not remember our last phone conversation?”

He sighs heavily. “I do, unfortunately. Look, I am so sorry baby. I shouldn’t have said any of that. I have just been scared out of my mind. I’m sorry. I know you would never betray me, especially with someone like him.”

I’m silent. What is there to say? How am I supposed to react to that? He broke up with me. Didn’t he? Yeah, he definitely did.Right?

“You said you were done,” I retort.

“With the conversation. I needed to cool down. What did you think I meant?”

I pause and swallow deeply, trying to clear the lump that has suddenly appeared in my throat.

“I thought you meant with me, with us. You were so mad. You said that you couldn’t believe you thought I was loyal enough to be your wife. You called me a whore. You made it sound like we were over.”

The phone goes silent. The silence stretches for so long that I have to check to make sure that we are still connected. We are, unfortunately.

“What did you do?” His voice thunders lowly through the phone. The sound of it sends a nasty rack of chills to run up my spine.

“Aiden-”

“WHAT DID YOU DO?” He roars.

I flinch at his tone, pulling it away from my ear before slowly bringing it back. I raise my head a little higher and push back my shoulders as I let Alessandro’s words of reassurance play in my mind.

“We are over, Aiden. You aren’t the man that I thought you were. What I do from now on is no longer any of your concern.”

I hear labored breathing coming through the phone for a few moments, but no words. That is when he finally erupts.

“YOU FUCKING SLUT! YOU ARE DEAD. YOU AND YOUR FUCKING LOVER. ENJOY YOUR LAST FEW MOMENTS IN YOUR FUCKING LAKE HOUSE. YOU BOTH ARE DEAD. DEAD, DEAD, DEAD!”

The call drops and fear like I have never felt before seeps into the pit of my stomach. He just said lake house. He knows where we are. How-

“Bella?” Alessandro asks gently from the hallway.

He is pulling on a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt, smiling until he sees my fear stricken face. Rushing over to me he cups my face with both of his hands. It is only under his steady hold that I realize that I am hysterically shaking.

“Bella, what’s wrong?”

My shaky gaze slowly makes its way up until I am looking into his eyes. They are filled with so much concern that I nearly drown in it. The warm tingling that settles across my body from his touch has me settling enough to at least speak.

“Aiden.”

Alessandro’s concern dissipates and irritation takes its place. He goes to say something, but I continue.

“H-he said something, about the lake house. He knows that we are here.”

“How the fuck does he know that?” Alessandro snarls. “Your dad specifically said that no one but my father knew where we were, not even our mothers.”

Alessandro drops his hands from my face as he takes a step back and begins pacing. He looks deep in thought as he pulls at his hair.

“Alessandro.”

He ignores me, continuing to pace and mutter under his breath.
