“Good. Where are you now?”

“Safe. But only just.”

We are both more than aware that his line could be being traced right now, private or not, and we know better than to say anything incriminating or location sensitive. You never know who could be listening.

“Fuck. Okay. Tomorrow, go to the place where the sea dragons lurk.”

I nod as I think about the place that he is talking about. My family’s lake house, where we spent a considerable amount of time growing up. It is in south Virginia in a pretty secluded area. Seraphina was convinced that she saw a sea dragon in the private lake when she was 8 and it became a running joke ever since.

“Yes, Boss.”

“Good. Do not contact anyone else. We don’t know what is going on or who could be potentially compromised.”

“You think this is an inside job?” I ask, brows furrowed.

“I don’t know what to think. It has been almost two decades since we have had anything like this happen to us. I am considering all options.”

“What about Benjamin? Seth? Drew? Do they know what happened?”

“Benjamin called almost immediately, he reported the deaths and oversaw the cleanup. As far as everyone is concerned, you and Seraphina are with us. You both made it just in time.”

“Yes, Boss.”

“Did you recognize anyone? Either at the house or the Jacobson estate? Anything that seemed familiar or anything you heard them say?”

“No. Nothing.”

“Alright. Keep your eyes open and your head down. As soon as we land this stupid fucking plane, we will come up with a plan.”

I nod, knowing he doesn’t need my verbal confirmation. A few murmured words are exchanged on the other side of the line before he speaks again.

“Your dad wants to talk to you.”

I hear some shuffling before my father’s voice comes through the speaker. “Son?”

“Hey dad.”

A breath of what sounds like relief comes from him. “Are you alright? How is Seraphina?”

“We are fine. How are mom and the girls?”

“They are ok. You know your mother. She is worried sick about you. She just fell asleep.” He lets out a rough sigh before he continues. “Stay safe, never let your guard down. Not even for a second. You can’t keep her safe if you are dead.”

“Understood.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

I go to hang up when my dad’s voice cuts in quickly. “Oh, wait. Aiden wants to talk to Seraphina.”

“Oh for fucks sake,” I mutter to myself.

I am tired, exhausted and pretty pissed off. I don’t need this asshole making my night even worse.

“Baby?” Aiden asks hopefully.

“Nope.”
