“No, just figured you’d be uncomfortable entertaining Mikonos for however long he’s here.”
“Hmm.” That’s her answer but I see that she sees where I’m coming from.
As Esme walks away, I turn to the bathroom near the entrance and wash my hands. After that, I open the door for Mikonos who is leaning against the wall on his cellphone while a brown skinned woman is standing there in a blush skirt suit. She has her hair pulled back in a bun and a briefcase in her hands. She’s definitely the lawyer but I don’t think she’s from here, I’ve never seen her.
“Finally done? That was quick. Marín meet the new Bishops’ lawyer, Kiara Fairhope. Kiara, Marín, Marín, Kiara. Now, let us in so we can get this over with.”
Kiara rolls her bright brown eyes as she gives me a small smile but I can tell that she means business. She extends her hand.
“Nice to meet you, Mr Delgado, unless you prefer Dr instead.”
“Either or is fine. It’s nice to meet you as well.” I shrug, shaking her hand just as Esme comes right behind me.
The hand that circles my bicep is more possessive than anything else. I want to tell her that I’m pretty sure Kiara is here to make me sign some crazy, binding contract that I’d probably never be able to break but I enjoy the little bit of jealousy that’s coming over my wife.
“You must be Ms Esme LeClaire, pleasure to meet you, I’m Kiara Fairhope.”
“Fairhope?” Esme responds as she also shakes Kiara’s extended hand.
“Yes. Deacon is family.”
“Enough pleasantries yet? Let’s get all this out of the way so you two can go back to fucking each other’s brains out.” Mikonos announces as if he’s in the bedroom with us when it happens.
A smirk forms on his face as if he can read my mind and a slight twitch of his brow is the only indication he gives me as an expression.
Once we make it inside, Mikonos and Kiara sit across from Esme and I at the dining table. I’m presented with a thick section of papers and Esme tries to look over and Mikonos tsks.
“Not for your eyes,Chispa.”Mikonos says with a blank expression but there’s amusement in his tone and it makes me curious as to how he could not show the expression on his face. “Your father wouldn’t be pleased with how I handle the situation once you take a look or even a glimpse of what’s written there.”
Both Esme and I know that’s a threat but not one that he makes because he feels like it. No, those are the rules. It’s the Bishops way and once I’m fully integrated, I’m sure I’ll understand but for now, this is some scary shit.
“If you don’t understand anything, please do not hesitate to ask me and I will further explain it.” Kiara speaks up.
“I have one question, my family…”
“If you want me to take care of your mother because of what’s going on with your fiancée and how she bribed her with money, it can be set up. I don’t torture old women or women in general,” he says as he side-eyes Kiara and she sits up straighter. “But she will know that it’s her last breath.”
“Wait what? You’re going to hurt her?” I ask, that can’t possibly be my main question.
“Doesn’t have to be. It can be stealthy. I can get her in her sleep.”
“What the fuck? I mean even if I don’t like her, I don’t want the bitch to die.” Esme says and I nod.
“No, I may disagree with my mother but I don’t want her dead.”
I stare at Mikonos, did he have to kill his own mother? Is this what the Bishops are about? Mikonos’s eyes switch to a deathly glare and immediately I switch my way of thinking because this isn’t my business or problem. I’m a doctor and that’s as far as it gets with the Bishops family.
“Sign so we can get the fuck out of your way. Esme looks like she’s wanting to be fucked into a coma,” Mikonos says. “Sucks that you have to wait until the wedding, huh? I respect it, Delgado.”
After his words, no one else said a single word. I was too busy trying to read over this life-binding contract that mostly protects me and my family instead of really focusing on how much Mikonos really knew about what was going on in peoples’ private lives. I wonder what my mother would do to have someone like him in her pocket… the good part is Mikonos wouldn’t even give her the time of day.
Finally, after signing all the pages, Kiara packs up the legally binding papers and puts them away. We stand as we escort them to the door. Mikonos, the fucking giant, turns back to face both Esme and me. He doesn’t say anything at first but then he nods, looking my way.
“Your father is under our protection as well.” He winks and they walk out.
“What the fuck …” I say.
“What the fuck, is right.” Esme repeats after me.
