Page 30 of What She Wants

It was too late.

“I’m so sorry…”

Words I always regret saying to anyone that is waiting on news about their loved one.

My heart breaks especially for him because not only did he lose his wife but his baby as well.

Two people were taken from him before he could continue to love them. Something that I wish I could change.

I knew how much they tried. How much they fucking loved each other and now, he had no one else there.

Usually, when news like this is delivered… the husband or wife or family throws a major fit. They blame me, God, and everyone under the sun yet this husband didn’t do that.

He didn’t say a single word to me. He just stared at me for a moment after I delivered the hard and sad news to him. He nodded then looked down at my hands, the blood was still there because there was a protocol with the Bishops. You tell them first before anything else.

His eyes seemed to turn darker than the night sky and his features were hard with no expression on them. This was much different than the times he was there when they visited me.

I realized I didn’t know him. What he showed me was just a facade. A certain small moment in his large life.

“Thank you.” He said after a moment of looking away.

He stood and fixed his suit. Without so much as a glance my way, he walked away.

That wasn’t the end of what made this a big night and not in a good way.

Andres Bishops met me in the locker room after my shower and he sat down on the bench not blinking at me coming out nude with a towel drying my hair.

“You did your best for my little brother.”

There wasn’t much that Andres Bishops had ever said to me. There’s never been a reason for him to but right now, the shift of the universe gave him a reason.

“His wife was my patient.” I answered. Not wanting to get too personal.

“And he knows you tried to save his baby as well. His wife, unfortunately, wasn't going to make it. He knew that and so did I, but sometimes in life, we get a little delusional about things. We grasp at fucking straws because we want it to work but it doesn’t.”

I changed into another pair of clean scrubs and finally faced him sitting at the opposite bench.

“Why didn’t he say who he was so he could get better care for her and her body? Before this, I mean.” I asked because I was curious.

“Who the fuck else would he have considered if you’re one of the best in the fucking country?”

“Mm.” I nodded to his answer.

“My little brother may not know what to say but I’m here. You were her doctor so I’d like for you to be in the room as Bishop comes in the room to bless her and the baby’s body.”

“Thank you.”

After the short but very much needed conversation between Andres Bishops and I, I respected the man in a different way now. I recognized what it felt like to be responsible for people and their health, bodies, and so much more.

He didn’t threaten even though he had a threatening aura about him. Andres Bishops calling me one of the best doctors in the country solidified what I already knew but it was nice to hear. A nice moment in a sad predicament of a situation.

When I walked into the room, there was a priest there but he wasn’t a regular priest, well he didn’t look like one. His eyes screamed vengeance while his demeanor but a face that I know my Catholic mother wouldn’t trust because a priest shouldn’t look like that.

“Bishop,” Andres called out to him. “This is Dr Delgado. He’s now a part of the Cosa Nostra.”

The what?!

My eyes widened as I looked from everyone in the room back to Andres. I was in a room full of other men I’d never seen before, Markos, Mikos, Ainslee Bishops and another woman I didn’t know but she looked equally dangerous.
