I nodded swiping at tears as they streamed down my face.

“I pushed him away. I told him I needed space. I was too chicken to tell him the truth. What have I done?”

“Lucy, this isn’t your fault.”

“I should have been with him.”

“You will be. Turn here. Just up there. Park next to the trucks. Anywhere is fine.”

As soon as I did, she jumped out of the car and then waited for me to follow. We ran up the hill. People were covered in mud from head to toe. I couldn’t tell who was who and it didn’t matter. They were working together as one moving debris and digging through the mud.

Kyle stood nearby barking orders, and everyone obeyed. It was like watching a machine at work until at last, there he was. They were pulling Micah out, and despite the caked on dirt, I knew it was him. I could feel him.

“I can feel him,” I yelled to Shelby. “He’s alive!”

I pushed my way up the hill even as they were passing him down. Arms reached out to stop me, but I pressed on. When I reached a safe landing, I demanded they set him down on the ground. It was enough to stall the well oiled pack machine.

Kyle looked down and saw it was me. He nodded and instructed them to listen to me.

They laid him down on the ground and I put out my hands to feel his life presence searching for any damage within his body.

A broken wrist was an easy heal.

A torn ACL took a couple seconds longer.

I moved up his body and cringed when I reached five broken ribs. I could feel my energy starting to wane, but I pulled what I needed from my wolf and together we mended them one by one.

Kelsey came over to see me.

“I have one left, a teen boy with a shattered arm. Lucy, he’s never even shifted. We have to save him, but I’m worn down from the others. I need your help.”

“But I have to save Micah. He should have woken up, but he’s not.”

“Is he stable?” she asked me.

I nodded hesitantly.

“Let me see.” Kelsey held her hands out above him and then smiled. “He’s going to be okay, Lucy, but this kid won’t be without our immediate help.”

I nodded. “Okay. It’s what Micah would do.”

“I’ll stay with him, Lucy,” Shelby said.

It took every ounce of strength I didn’t feel I had to walk away from him.

“I need you fully focused, Lucy,” Kelsey said.

“I know what we have to do.”

I reached for her hand and held it tightly in mine. Together we merged our powers and concentrated fully on his arm. I could feel the shards begin to bind together. It took a lot of concentration as we couldn’t afford to miss even one sliver or else this boy may never get a chance to shift. We couldn’t let that happen.

Everything inside me screamed to go back to Micah, but I pushed it down and forced myself to focus. It took us over half an hour, but the worst was over. It was still broken and would take days, possibly weeks to fully heal, but we had managed to reconnect the pieces and set the shattered bone.

“He’s going to be okay,” Kelsey said as she sat back and wiped sweat from her brow. “I couldn’t have done this without you.”

“Lucy?” I heard Micah say.

I turned to find him leaning on Shelby as they walked slowly towards us.
