“I know. We should call him back in. I don’t care if he’s on call or not. And maybe Clara too.”

“Clara’s been hanging out around the clinic, getting bored between assignments. I think she’d be happy to assist tonight if it will make you feel better. Remember, we’re still just on baby watch, she’s not in active labor yet.”

“No, but it can go quickly when the time comes,” I told him.

I had sat up with enough of my girls and seen enough deliveries to know what to expect, even with the added concern of twins. In truth I could probably deliver the babies myself, but I didn’t mention that. I was no expert and I wouldn’t dare put one of my girls at risk trying to pretend I was.

I picked up my cell and dialed Clara.

“Hello?”

“Hey Clara. Do you have plans tonight?”

“No, not really. Gage and I were just settling in for a movie. Why?”

“Mellie’s in labor and could deliver tonight,” I told her.

“Mellie? That name doesn’t ring a bell. Do I know her?”

“One of my cows, Clara. Keep up,” I said.

“Oh, one of your girls is expected to deliver tonight. I got it now. Do you want me to come and keep you company, like we did as kids? Barnyard slumber party? I could call the girls and get them over too, just like old times.”

I laughed at the memories.

“Well, Bran is staying with me, and Doc’s here.”

“Doc? Where’s Davidson?”

“He’s off tonight and Doc’s on call for him. I’m a little nervous,” I admitted.

Clara laughed. “Sweetie, you always get nervous when one of your girls is about to deliver. Just imagine how much worse you’ll be when one of us gets pregnant.”

“I’m not that bad,” I said, rolling my eyes even knowing she couldn’t see me. “It’s just that Mellie’s expecting twins.”

Clara paused for only a moment. “I’m on my way. You said Bran’s there? Mind if I bring Gage, too?”

“Now that sounds like a modern-day barnyard slumber party to me.”

I hung up the phone and let Doc know that Clara was coming to stay the night.

“Do you want some sister time then? Should I go upstairs?” Bran asked.

“No, Gage is tagging along too. It’ll be fun,” I assured him.

Bran

Chapter 11

I really didn’t think hanging out with her sister and mate in a barn, watching a cow give birth, was my idea of fun, but I knew I wasn’t going anywhere else, either.

Half an hour later Clara and Gage strolled in, with Elizabeth and Cole Anderson. My heart stilled for a moment, thinking they were on to me. Cole Anderson was a Westin Pack Beta. I knew he and his mate split their time between Westin and Collier Packs, but my resources told me they weren’t due back in Collier for another two months.

“Hey, you guys. I didn’t know you were coming too. Are you staying?” Ruby asked as she rose to hug her sisters.

I stood too and shook Gage’s hand and accepted the hug Clara offered. I had only met them once, briefly, on the night I’d arrived.

“Bran, this is my oldest sister Lizzy, and her mate, Cole. Guys, this is my mate, Bran,” Ruby said as she introduced us.
