Someone we very much want on our team right now. Just trust me,I said, noticing the ironic quirk in her expression. I ignored it and asked,What are we closest to?

Not much. We’re on the edge of town. The jailhouse is nearby. There may be someone on duty since they have the two wolves that chased me locked there.

Perfect. There’s an entire team on alert there tonight. They’ll be in touch with Silas. Lead the way.

She didn’t question or argue as we ran on.

Chapter 24

The moment we reached the jail, we were surrounded. Guns pointed at our heads, surrounded. My heart nearly leapt from my chest and the edges of my vision started to turn red. The fur on my neck rose and I moved to protect my mate. These weren’t normal instincts for a female unless protecting her pup, but Cole and I had been through too much for me to lose him now.

“Shit, this bitch may be rabid,” James swore at my response from their threats.

Wyatt sniffed the air. He was a good friend of my brother’s, part of the infamous Collier Six Pack that included Thomas and James, too. “She’s Collier, you idiot. Stand down.” He sniffed again. “Not so fast. I’m not sure what he is.”

I watched as Cole shifted and crossed his arms over his chest.

“Shit, that’s Cole Anderson, dude. Back off,” James told Wyatt.

Wyatt motioned, and I felt the tension in the area drop significantly, realizing for the first time that we’d had more guns than just his trained on us. There was an entire team clearly on high alert.

“Are you in communication with Silas?” Cole asked.

Wyatt nodded. “Every fifteen minutes he has us checking in.”

“Good, we ran across some Larkens on Collier land not far from here. They’re moving forward with the break-out despite heightened security. Cocky enough to think they can get around us, or they’ve got a guy on the inside. Maybe a bit of both.”

I sucked in a sharp breath. Did Cole really think a Collier would betray us like that? I went to ask and only a yip came out. I had momentarily forgotten I was still in my fur. I shifted quickly to stand next to my mate.

“Shit, Lizzy! Someone get me a blanket, quick,” James insisted, wrapping it around me the moment he got it.

The old Lizzy would have blushed. The new Elizabeth couldn’t have cared less, but I had played the innocent prude for so long that it was what they expected.

Cole just looked at me and shook his head with a knowing smirk on his face.

“We need to move quickly,” I said. “The wolves we overheard said they were moving in before sunrise when we’d least expect it.”

We were shuffled into the Sheriff’s office which was closed off with a dampener so no one outside the room could hear what was being said.

Wyatt placed a call and put it on speaker.

“Painter here,” a man responded.

“Need to speak with Silas. This is Cole Anderson.”

“Silas is sleeping, I’m in charge at the moment. What can I do for you?”

“No offense, but I don’t know you from Jack. Get Silas on the phone now.” The authority in Cole’s voice sent shivers up my spine. I loved seeing my man in full control.

“This better be good, Anderson,” a gruffy male voice said through the phone.

“We have company. I’m texting you their coordinates now,” Cole said as he reached for the phone James was already offering and punched in some numbers.

“How many?”

“We didn’t get close enough to see, but heard two voices.”
