“Will you just die already?” I ground out.
Lust began to chuckle this time instead of Pride. “Poor little humans think they can actually win. If it weren’t so pathetic, it would be funny.”
“Then why are you already laughing?”
With a glance at Eli, and without missing a beat, I dipped my chin. He scanned my face and nodded once. Knowing me well enough to see the plan I had in mind.
I didn’t know if the angelic telepathy worked down here but judging from the silence in my head, I was willing to bet not. Or maybe it was just something wrong with me.
Eli gave me a final serious look before springing into action.
Did I trust Eli to have my back? He’d lied to me before, but I knew him to be loyal and steadfast. He’d sacrificed a lot to get to this point and I hoped his “sacrifice a few for the greater good” mentality would take a back seat right now to get us out of here.
“You two really are adorable,” Lust said with a grin stretching tightly across the lower half of his face. “You and the Guardian. It’s clear to see how often you’ve enjoyed each other’s bodies. I’m sure you fucked like rabbits, haven’t you? I can tell. I can practically smell it on you.”
Nothing about the way he said the words made it less repulsive. “You’re a few months too late.” Still, his smile made my skin crawl. “Old news, buddy.”
Now I had to personally kick his ass. Screw Pride. Lust was going down if I had to dig the hole myself.
Red eyes flashed before I charged at him. His lips pursed as though he meant to kiss me but sidestepped at the last minute, turning in a circle and kneeing me in my bad leg. I crumbled with a howl.
“Low blow,” I managed to get out.
Lust held his arms out at the sides. “You’re always welcome to make a deal. I know you said Monnie wasn’t the best kisser, but you haven’t tired me yet. Don’t judge all of my kind on that greedy son of a bitch.”
“I’m not sure there’s any worse out there. You’re all alike.” I shook my head. God, even my quips were going downhill fast.
He crooked a finger at me, taunting me to do my worst.
There was no holding back now. I needed to keep him occupied while Eli and the others handled Pride.
In a move straight out of a fencing book, I parried him and jabbed Bertha straight at his gut.
He yanked the sword right out of my hand and I choked when he grabbed my neck with the other. Yup, the same ridiculous demon strength. At least this time I knew better than to try and make a deal with either one of them. Or try to barter for a way to save Cole. I’d only get us into worse shit.
“Come on, Jade. You’re not going to ask how I know?” Lust licked his lips. “About you and the Guardian?”
He dropped me as quickly as he grabbed me. My knees knocked hard against the ground. Coughing amidst his sweet giggles.
I shook my head and immediately went in for a one-two punch before he anticipated my next move, knowing I didn’t have time to get my sword back. Too bad for me. I only knocked him back a step.
“You know, I’ve seen way too much to be surprised by you anymore,” I said.
My heart sank a little more with each passing second because it didn’t feel like these guys were going down anytime soon.
I only needed one of them gone. Justone. Without the two working in tandem, we would be able to get the upper hand.
I hoped.
Lust turned his leer up to eleven, more for his benefit than for mine, because the look was pretty scary on him.
“I can smell it on you.”
“Smell what?” I grunted.
None of my hits landed.
“The scent of your arousal when the two of you were together,” Lust continued, his voice a gutsy groan. “I bet you went at it hard. I bet you let him penetrate you deeply with his angel cock. Did you?”
