I gaped at it in disbelief. “Shit. They fucking shot an arrow at us.”

“Motherfuckers found us,” Nic uttered as we ran toward the cabin and slammed the door closed.

“How did they find us?” I asked, as more arrows embedded themselves into the outside of the cabin.

Nic rushed for the duffle filled with weapons. “Those fucking wolves are well-trained trackers,” he said as he pulled out a rifle that didn’t look like anything I’d ever seen. “But I don’t know how they tracked us this fast.” He looked at me, his gaze lingering over me as if I held the answer. “Come here,” he said, as he grabbed my arm and dragged me down to the floor with him, crouching away from the windows. “Lift up your shirt.”

My brows furrowed. “What? Why?”

“Just do it. Now.”

“Okay. Okay. Geez.” As I lifted my shirt over my head, he began to press on my breasts with his fingers. “Um, Nic. I don’t think now is the time for this.”

“Hush.” He kept kneading my breasts until he stopped right above my left breast. Pressing harder with his fingertips, he said, “There you are.”

“What the hell is going on, Nic?”

“They inserted a GPS tracker in you.”

My stomach sank, and my hand flew to the spot. There it was. A small dime-sized circle just under the skin. They must’ve done it when they threw me in their SUV.

“We’re going to have to get it out.” He ruffled through his bag and produced a pocket knife. Flicking it open, he said. “Stay still.”

“You’re just going to dig it out of me?” I screamed as another arrow crashed through the window above us, making broken glass rain down on us.

“Hold still,” he ordered again, and this time I listened. Sucking in a deep breath, Nic nicked my skin and popped the device out in a flash. I barely felt it at all. He held it up for me to see before crushing it between his two fingers.

The growls sounded closer, coming from all directions.

“They’re surrounding us,” I said, wondering how we were going to make it out of this.

Nic stole a glance out the window in the front, then rushed to the opposite side. “There’s too many. We need to find another way out.”

“How?”

“Catherine had this place built as a safe house. She must’ve incorporated an escape in case she was ever ambushed.”

“By who?”

He glanced my way and shrugged. “My family, who else?”

“They sound lovely.”

“Here, let’s move the couch and peel back the rug.”

As we did, we uncovered a hidden door to an underground tunnel. Another menacing growl ripped through the night, and my gaze snapped to Nic. Panic flitted across his face. We had to move. Fast.

He ripped open the hatch and waved for me to go in. Wasting no time, I leaped into the darkness. Nic jumped in after me, the rifle strapped across his chest, and swung the door closed behind us. Placing the duffle on the ground, he reached in and pulled out a handgun. Checking for ammunition, he inspected the magazine before handing it to me. “Ever use one of these before?”

I shook my head no.

“Simple,” he said, unlatching the safety and showing me how to aim at the darkness. “Once you have them in your sights, pull the trigger. Got it?”

My head whirled, but I nodded anyway. Hopefully, I wouldn’t have to use it.

Above us, footsteps thundered and dirt rained down. “Nic…”

“Come on!” He grabbed my hand and pulled me into a run.
