I went to one of the nearest transportation portals down the street, which was on the dock by the harbor. After speaking my destination, I was whisked away through time and space to the platform outside the bar. I walked up to the door and pulled the handle to find it locked.
Closed.
“What the—”
Wyatt never closed. I glanced at the high windows, all dark. Not even the neon signs were glowing.
I jiggled the handle again, but of course, the door remained locked. When I looked up, that’s when I noticed the piece of paper haphazardly taped to the glass and scribbled on.
Closed today. With the Mrs. -W.M.
A grin captured my face. Well, will you look at that. Lisa had gotten through and was now back with her husband.
And I had been the one to do that. I had helped make that happen.
Happiness filled me. After everything Wyatt had done to help me—even when it had cost him his life—I was glad I was able to get him the one thing he wanted more than anything else.
They were together again. Like they were meant to be.
“Strange, isn’t it?” Marla’s brown curls appeared by my arm. She looked up at me, puzzled. “I’ve been waiting here for an hour or so, convinced he’d open a little later, but nope. And I thought his wife wasn’t here. You couldn’t even find her on your watch thing. What do you suppose happened?”
I shrugged. “I may have taken a quick trip to Hell and picked her up.”
Her brown eyes widened. “You what? No way.”
“Yeah.”
“You must have broken a hundred rules.”
“More like a thousand.”
“Wow. You better hope no one finds out.”
No kidding. Activating the Hell elevator without authority had to call for immediate Release.
Was it worth it, though? I’d have to say yes. Right now, Wyatt and his wife were together again.
“Yeah, and now, I have to go back,” I continued.
She grabbed my arm and pulled me down the sidewalk a ways, glancing around as if she were afraid someone might overhear.
“Are you insane?” she whispered, her voice still climbing. “You could have been stuck there. Your soul could have been lost forever.”
“Oh, I know. And I almost was trapped there.”
She gasped. “How did you get out?”
“I had to make a deal with a demon. Hence why I have to go back.”
“Oh, Jade. I don’t like this. My sister used to work with demons and dark magic, and it only brought death and chaos.”
Death I could handle. But I knew what she meant.
“It was the only way I could get us out,” I explained.
She paused. “I don’t know, Jade. I don’t know if Wyatt would like that you risked all this, even if you got his wife back. And now the demon wants you back? Why? It must be a trap.”
“I’m sure it is, but I don’t have much of a choice. Not to mention I need to go back anyway.”
