Chapter Fourteen
Iarch an eyebrow suspiciouslyat him as I reach for the cane and get to my feet. No one knows I’m here except for Dalton.
“Who is it?” I ask as I slowly get to my feet.
“Me!” comes a familiar, excited shout.
I gasp as Skylar comes bursting around the corner and throws her little body against mine, her arms wrapping around me and gripping me.
Tears of relief begin to roll down my cheeks.
He did it.
He fucking did it.
She looks up at me and gives me a big smile, and I laugh as more tears spill. I can’t believe she’s here with me, since I told Dalton to take them somewhere safe.
No. No, I told him to get them out of the house.
I brush her hair away from her forehead before I finally return her hug.
“Where’s your brother?” I ask as I pull away.
“He’s at home,” she replies with a shrug. As she takes a step back, I watch her eyes go around the room, taking in her surroundings rather curiously.
“This kind of looks like Daddy’s house,” she murmurs.
No, it doesn’t. This looks like a shrine to that bastard.
“Does it?” I press as I walk back toward the recliner and sit down.
Skylar nods as she bounces toward the couch across from me and gets comfortable, crossing her legs underneath herself.
“Well, kinda,” she muses, making a face.
I smile at her.
The minds of children can often find a home in the strangest of places, and it seems this one is no different.
Von chuckles, drawing my attention back to him, before he moves away from the doorframe again.
I can hear the drone of soft voices talking and I’m assuming that he and Dalton are getting to know each other.
“Boy talk,” I tease Skylar when she casts a curious glance my way. She screws up her nose, causing me to grin.
