Chapter 14
Xander
Smoke and fire filledmy rearview window as we drive away from the warehouse, passing two police vehicles with their red and whites glowing. Two blocks later, Mike’s SUV falls in line behind Yiorgos’. Tech tells us there were community surveillance cameras but he was able to get into them and blur our images and the license plates of our vehicles.
On our ride back to Winnetka, Zar hits up Yiannis and Sebastian, who are waiting on his call to find out what happened. Yiannis says by the time we get there, the jet will be ready to fly us back to Texas. After hanging up with them, Zar reaches out to Yiorgos through the earpieces.
“Yiorgos, are you coming back to Dallas with us?”
“No, I think I should stay here just in case that asshole thinks we’ve deserted our territory. Little does he know what will be waiting on him if he tries,” he replies as he and Basil laughed in our ears.
Zar slowly shakes his head. “Are you sure? The other Boss’ can look after things while you’re gone.”
The laughter ceases before a serious sounding Yiorgos speaks, “I am sure, cousin. If you need me, all you have to do is call or if I think you need me I am coming. While I think the Bosses can handle things in my stead, I need to be here to show these motherfuckers you don’t fuck with the Kourakos.”
“Thank you, cousin,” Zar humbly says with appreciation.
Yiorgos clears his throat. “There is no need for thanks. We are family, Balthazar. Fuck all that bullshit in the past, hell even back then I still would have stood by your side because that is what family do.”
They end their transmission as we steer our way back to Yiannis’.
When we make it to the mansion, we pull to the back where Jeeves and a few of the other guards wait on us. Once we’ve stripped to our underwear, they take the clothing down to the incinerator Yiannis had in his basement to burn. Yiannis and Althaia might be moving to Dallas, but we all knew he would never give up this house, there are too many secrets in it. Some Zar, Alistair, and I knew about and some only he, my Father, and Sebastian knew.
Once we were showered and in fresh clothes, we met back in the living room. Yiannis and Sebastian took Zar, Yiorgos, and Basil into the den to have a discussion. Time seemed to be at a snail’s pace as we waited for them to return. All I can think about is getting to Sabre to see for my own eyes, she was okay. I’m sure Alistair and Mike were having the same thoughts because Alistair had threw back three Patron shots with beer chasers and Mike chews at his nonexistent nails.
They finally come out, all with smiles plastered on their faces an hour later.
Yiannis steps forward declaring, “Yiorgos and Basil will stay here...and by here I mean in Chicago and here in the mansion. If we need him, he, Basil, and his men, who will be here tomorrow, will come. As stated before, Jeeves will show Yiorgos our layout and we have opted to add more security to our establishments. If it was that easy for us to infiltrate Santiago’s warehouse, then he might think the same of us. Father and I have given Yiorgos permission to run the city how he sees fit...” He glances at Yiorgos. “Within limits. We don’t want any unnecessary wars.”
Yiorgos gives Yiannis a salute with a devious smirk.
Yiannis continues, “With that being said, we need to get to the jet and see about our women. I know you don’t want to hear it, but I’m instructing that you don’t call them in advance to let them know we’re coming. We don’t know what to expect once we touch ground and I don’t want them worrying if we don’t show up as expected. Am I clear?”
A round of grumpy yeses echo around the room except from Mike’s crew. I guess they are used to this type of shit but I want Sabre to know I was hours away from her, but with that order, and hopefully no hiccups in between, I’ll surprise her with my presence.
Yiannis gives Yiorgos the keys to the house, the security code, and the access to his vehicles before we left. We had to laugh when Alistair made it abundantly clear that no one, I mean no one is to ride, sit, or touch up against his motorcycle.
The flight crew is waiting on us when we arrive. After getting seated and belted in, we are in the air in no time. As the stewardess comes around to see if we want anything to eat or drink, we all pretty much decline, wanting to get to the ladies. I used the next hour and half, napping to speed up our flight time.
What seemed like me just closing my eyes for just a few seconds was disturbed by Zar tapping my knee letting me know we were back in Dallas and landing. That information pushed all of my fatigue from the last few days to the side as I anxiously began to count down the minutes until Sabre was back in my arms.
Like any other time, SUVs waited on us as we departed the jet, only this time there were more guards present, courtesy of Zar.
“Stay alert and ready,” Zar cautions as we exit with Hendrix going out first, followed by Yiannis and Sebastian and Frankie covering their rear. Zar goes next, then Alistair, me, then Mike and his men. Luckily, there were no attempts on our lives here.
