“Or what? You and I both know what I’m saying is true, only you won’t admit it. Your brothers are pieces of shit who still live with your parents. They’d rather hang in the streets hustling, living their best lives until they get caught up in a jam, but they don’t have nothing to worry about because you’re always going to be there to bail them out, right? And if your parents gave a shit, they would’ve put their grown asses out a long time ago, instead of condoning the shit they do or putting it all on you. If you were smart you would cut all their asses off.” He picked up his glass of wine and took a huge gulp.
I sat there, shocked at his words. Yes, my family could be a bit much at times, but family is family.
“What I do for my family is no different than what you would do for yours,” I hissed, pissed at this point.
Xander finished off the wine then sat the glass back on the table. “But would your family do the same for you as mine would for me? Don’t ever fucking compare your family to mine because sweetheart, my family always have one another’s backs, unlike yours who are just fucking vampires sucking you dry and when all your money is gone, they will be too.”
Now that was some honesty for my ass and even though I knew he was right, it still angered me. As fucked up as my family was, nobody talked about them, not even Xander. I removed my napkin from my lap, pushed my chair back, then stood.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“Home,” I sneered.
Xander picked up the wine bottle and poured himself another glass. “I’m not going to beg you to stay or even say I’m sorry for my words, Sabre. If me telling you the truth about your family angers you, then maybe I’m not the man you should be with.”
“Maybe you’re not,” I responded as I left him in the dining room.
After grabbing my purse, I left his condo, heading to my house in Oak Park. As I drove along the expressway, silent tears fell because I might’ve lost a good man all because I chose to stand up for my family.
The next two weeks after that was downright unbearable. Xander didn’t call, text, or even show up at my job for lunch. I was miserable without him. I missed his laugh, his touch, his smell, hell I just missed my man. The stubbornness in me wouldn’t allow me to reach out to him, although I knew it was my fault we were not together. I knew my family was using me, but I had played that role of rescuer for so long I didn’t know how to break it. Silly me though, because in my mind I just knew Xander would cave first and show up at my house or job with a dozen roses, proclaiming how much he missed me, but instead it was me going to his office.
“Hey Pamela, I’m here to see Xander,” I said to his secretary as she sat at her desk, talking to another woman that was standing at the counter.
Pamela who was often friendly to me, looked at the other woman, then at me with annoyance returned, “He’s on a conference call which probably won’t end for another hour or so.”
“That’s fine, I’ll wait,” I told her as I took a seat in one of the empty chairs.
Taking out my phone I began to look over new properties listed with my firm that were up for sale when I heard Pamela try to whisper to the other woman, “Yeah that’s her. She must be here to try and suck her way back in. I mean, he hasn’t had me send her flowers like before or been on any long lunch breaks with her ass, so she must be here to beg to be in his good graces. She should’ve stayed in whatever hole she was in because I just about got him where I want him and here her ass comes.”
“And where is that Pamela?” I asked, putting my phone in my purse, then standing.
The other woman stepped to the side as I came to the counter with Pamela’s spray tanned face directed towards me.
She threw her blonde mane over her shoulder, turning up her nose at me. “Why are you even here? He hasn’t mentioned you in almost two weeks. You’re just like all the rest, only this time you’re here to beg him to stay with you.”
I had to let out a laugh. “Pamela let’s get this straight...I’m nothing like the rest. I’m one of a kind, but if you think he would want your silicon body, then baby that’s what dreams are made for, because let me let you in on a little secret...” I leaned over the counter just so she could hear me clearly. “Xander loves a woman that is all natural, and by the looks of your breasts and lips, you will never have a chance.”
Pamela bolted from her seat, causing it to crash into the copier. “I could have him if I wanted him.”
I laughed. “Is that right? But as you said, I’ve been gone for almost two weeks; have you got him yet?”
Pamela’s face flushed red as she rushed to the counter, but never came around it. She knew what would greet her on the other side. Like I said I knew when to be professional but I could flip that switch to ‘street’ really quick.
“Just leave. It’s clear Xander is through with you,” Pamela said in a raised voice, trying to sound tough.
I winked at her. “But has he told you that?”
Just as she was about to answer, Xander’s office door opened with him stepping out.
“What is going on out here?” He looked around the room, then stopped when he saw me standing there. “Sabre, what are you doing here?”
“I told her you were on a conference call, but she got belligerent and started to make a scene, Mr. Andino,” lying ass Pamela said.
I didn’t even dispute her words, because of all people Xander knew that was not how I acted.
“Well, I’m done with my call. Sabre, you can come in now,” Xander stated.
Pamela huffed. “But Mr. Andino she just...”
