Chapter 6

Alistair

When we returned tomy parents’ house, we found everyone in the den conversing about their day. When the ladies saw Hailey’s ring, they gasped as they held her hand to get a better look. Mother glanced over at me and nodded with a wink, approving my selection. When Devyn showed them her earrings and bracelet, they admired those as well.

GeeGee came over and hugged me, stating, “You did good my little wild child.”

“Thank you,” I returned as I lifted her off her feet, hugging her tight.

“Boy, put me down before you drop me! You know I have brittle bones,” she joked.

I laughed as I sat her on her feet. “GeeGee, you’re too mean to have brittle bones.” She swatted my arm before rejoining the women.

They left the room a few moments later, so the ladies could show Hailey and Devyn their purchases from their shopping spree, as well as some items they picked up for them. I was surprised when Hailey came over to me, stood on her tiptoes, and kissed my cheek.

“Thank you for today,” she whispered.

“You’re welcome,” I said in a low voice. Hailey smiled as she left me standing there, watching her sexy ass sashay away.

“It seems like your wife is coming around,” Balthazar acknowledges.

I turn to face him, but see the others have their attention on me too.

“Was there any doubt that she wouldn’t?” I ask, going over to the refrigerator at the bar, taking out a beer.

Twisting off the top, I throw it in the trash, looking up at their blank expressions that fall when they break out into a fit of laughter.

“Well, shit,” Xander chokes, pulling out his wallet. He takes out five crisp one hundred dollar bills, handing them to Zar. “I just knew she wasn’t going to give in this soon.”

Zar chuckles while taking the money. “I told you, we Kourakos men have a way of getting our women to see things our way.”

I tilt my head to the side. “Did you two really place a bet on me and my wife?”

The look that I’m giving them ceases their laughter. At this point, they're probably wondering which side of me they’re going to get.

“Shit,” Zar murmurs. “Alistair, it was just a friendly wager. Hell, we all knew Hailey would eventually cave into your magnetic charm, some just thought it would take longer.” He glances over at Xander who shakes his head.

“I assumed she would fight a little longer. Hailey is not like the other women you’ve dealt with in the past, she actually has a brain,” Xander says, trying to appease me.

I take a sip from the beer, then sit the bottle on the bar. “So, you’re saying she’s too good for me? That you would’ve been happier if she pushed me away so you could win a bet?”

“What, no,” Xander answers with a perplexed look. “Man, Alistair, I’m happy for the two of you.”

I take a step towards him.

“Alistair,” Zar calls in that big brother tone. He’s giving me that cautionary look. Father, Grandfather, and Mike are sitting back, taking everything in.

I give Xander one last hard look before cracking up. “I’m just fucking with you! Hell, I probably should have gotten in on that bet!”

They stare at my crazy ass before they, too, start laughing.

“You play too much,” Xander states, taking a drink from his glass of brown liquor.

“Whatever! You should’ve seen your face,” I tease, picking the bottle back up, then going over to sit next to Father on the couch.

“Alistair, you shouldn’t joke with them like that. You know it’s hard to tell sometimes when you’re being serious and...your cheeky self,” Father cautions.

“Father, they’ve been around me all of my life. They should know the difference by now. Mike is the only one here who is still trying to figure out my sparkling personality,” I counter with a smirk.
