“I sure will,” he replied as he picked up the tennis bracelet. She held out her arm for him. Alistair undid the clasp, wrapped it around her tiny wrist, and fastened it. Devyn smiled as she twirled it around, watching the diamonds sparkle. “Devyn, this bracelet and earrings are a symbol of my devotion as your big brother. No one will ever hurt you again, okay?” Devyn nods with tears in her eyes, as she hugs him tight.
“Thank you, brother,” she whispered.
“You’re welcome,” Alistair returned.
Devyn wiped her eyes as he let her go. She then turned to me. “Hailey, will you put my earrings in,” She requested.
William pushed the tray closer to me. I reached to pick up the first one, then gasped when I saw the total amount for everything on the receipt. Alistair chuckled as he slid the piece of paper and pen from the tray. He quickly signed it and placed it back on the tray face down.
“Hailey,” Devyn called.
“Oh, sorry Sis. Devyn, you are not to take these off. If for some reason you have to, you either have Alistair or I do it, okay? We don’t want you to lose them.”
“I’m never taking them off,” she beamed before hugging me, and running over to the mirror to look at the earrings after I put them in. She smiled from ear to ear at her reflection. This is the Devyn I loved to see.
“Hailey sweetheart, will you do the honors of putting my ring on me,” Alistair asked.
I took a deep breath. There was no turning back now. Now, rings were sealing me and Devyn’s fate to this man. Carefully, I picked up the band that matched mine, as Alistair held out his left hand. He wore a serious expression as I eased the ring onto his finger.
Once on, he stared deep into my eyes and said, “Until death do us part.” A chill went down my spine.
Althaia’s words echoed in my head at that moment, ‘Once a Kourakos man marries a woman, there’s no turning back, even if it was done under crazy circumstances.’ Now, I truly believed her.
“Alistair, can we go get something to eat,” Devyn asked, breaking our intense stare down.
Alistair smiled at her, and answered, “Yes, we can. I know the perfect place.”
He leaned over and shook William’s hand before putting the receipt in the inside pocket of his suit jacket. Alistair then grabbed the bag and stood. I stared at his hand as he offered it to me. Well Mrs. Kourakos, welcome to married life.
