Chapter 8

I sit at my desk staringat the rain as it falls outside the window of my office on this rainy Friday. I reflect on how much my life has changed in the last two months. That’s how long it’s been since we brought the girls back to Dallas from Chicago. Trent still hasn’t shown his dog face, and Andre has kept his ass in Atlanta. If either one of them dares to bring their asses our way, we’re ready for them.

I never really knew how empty my house felt until Hailey and Devyn moved in. I loved having them with me. Zar said it would take some getting used to, but that wasn’t the case. From the day they came into the house, it was like they were meant to be here.

Devyn chose one of the guest rooms downstairs for her bedroom. I had everything moved out of the room and donated the pieces to Goodwill. Afterwards, Hailey and I took Devyn furniture shopping to pick out her new bedroom suite, which she was very excited about. As promised, I surprised her the next day with a twenty gallon aquarium, filled with clown fish. Being that I am the younger sibling, having Devyn as my little sister makes me understand how Balthazar feels in his role as my big brother. I just want to protect her.

Hailey was now the queen of the castle. I told her she could redecorate however she saw fit. Much to my surprise, she said she liked the way it was, and didn't want to change anything. The only items she wanted to add were a few live plants here and there. She chose one of the guest rooms downstairs to set up as her home office to begin her practice again. Eventually, I would like for her to move into one of the offices here in our building.

Thinking about my wife, I smile as my mind drifts back to that night in Chicago when we first made love. Even though she tried to suffocate me, that shit turned me on. Hey, crazy loves crazy. I let her rest after the first time, but an hour later, I took her again, and again. By the third time, my poor wife was depleted, and hoarse from screaming. After cleaning her up, I went downstairs to the kitchen and got us a couple of Gatorades. I wanted to go one more round, but told Frank we can’t be greedy, Hailey really needed her rest then.

The next morning, I got up before Hailey, and ran her a hot bubble bath. I knew she was going to be a little sore from our steamy night. Once I had the tub filled, I woke her, and picked her up bridal style. I carried her into the bathroom and lowered her into the tub. Hailey smiled up at me and I couldn’t resist kissing her, morning breath and all. Fuck it, she’s my wife now, and for the record, her breath didn’t stink.

While she took her bath, I grabbed some clothes and my toiletry kit, went to the empty guest room down the hall, and took a shower. When I came back into the room, Hailey was out of the tub and getting dressed. She had on a black and white Adidas jogger set with matching shoes. Her hair was no longer straight, but hanging in natural curls. She looked stylishly beautiful.

“Good morning,” she happily greeted.

“Good morning to you,” I returned, going over to her, pulling her into my arms. “We need to pack our things. I’m sure we’ll probably be leaving before noon.”

“Okay, most of my stuff is still in my bag from the other night,” Hailey responded with a guilty smile. I swatted her ass, then palmed it.

“I’m not even going to bring that up. We are starting fresh, so no more running. You and Devyn’s place is with me.” I pecked her lips, then told her, “Let’s go see what’s for breakfast. I’m sure Mother and GeeGee have something prepared.”

“I hope so, because that Gatorade did nothing to replenish me,” she said, as I took her hand, laughing.

We were the last ones to make it down to the dining room. Everyone was seated and had already begun to eat breakfast.

“Good morning,” Hailey and I both greeted, at the same time.

“Good morning” echoed around the room to us.

We smiled at them as I led Hailey to our seats, pulling her seat out for her. As I was beginning to sit, GeeGee asked, “How did the two of you sleep last night?” She had a knowing look in her eyes. GeeGee’s room was down the hall from ours, so I know what she is trying to ask, without asking.

“Peacefully,” I replied, spreading my napkin on my lap as the others stared at me and Hailey.

“And you, Hailey? How did you sleep,” GeeGee prodded?

“I was out as soon as my head hit the pillow,” Hailey quickly replied, before she started fixing our plates.

GeeGee smiled. “That’s good that the both of you were able to get some sleep. I, on the other hand, didn't get much. I think there were some cats outside in heat, screeching and moaning, which kept me up way into the wee hours of this morning.”

Hailey’s eyes widened as she dipped her head, side eyeing me. I fell into a fit of laughter, along with the others, as I reached under the table and squeezed her thigh. GeeGee knew it wasn’t any damn cats making those noises, but my wife in pure ecstasy.

After breakfast, everyone went back to their rooms to pack. Once we were done, we left heading to the airport. Mother, Father, and Grandfather rode with us, because they weren’t ready to say goodbye at the house. When we made it to the air strip, we kissed and hugged them goodbye with the promise to be back soon. Mother stated she wanted the ladies and Devyn to come back in a few weeks for a girls weekend getaway. They assured her, they would. I knew she would be sad to see them all go, but Zar made her day when he requested she come to Dallas the following weekend for a visit.

GeeGee did come stay with us that first month. She has been such a blessing. Having her here helped Hailey and Devyn adjust with ease. She was able to show Hailey where the best shopping areas in the neighborhood were. I didn’t want them venturing out too far by themselves. Hailey was adamant about not having a security detail, but like the other ladies, she and Devyn will always have one, they just couldn’t see them.

It’s funny how things change. There was a time when I spent most of my nights at my condo in the city, but now, I couldn’t wait to get home to Hailey and Devyn. Sunday’s have become family dinner day over at Zar and Nina’s house. Not only do we attend, but Xander, Hendrix, Frankie, Mike and Janae, as well as Tech and Lethal, come when they are able to. As the ladies were in the kitchen helping GeeGee with dinner, us men were either in the den watching sports, or in the backyard, talking over business. I loved spending Sundays with my family.

Devyn started school last month and she loves it. She’s made new friends, and seems to be fitting in well. Two weeks before it started, we went to get her enrolled and check it out. T. Morris is a private middle school with a high ass tuition, but I didn’t mind paying it after discovering the school has a pretty good security system. No one could have access to Devyn without our permission. I made sure to let it be known that other than Hailey and me, the only people who were allowed to pick Devyn up from school would be Zar, Nina, and GeeGee. Most days, I’m the one who drops her off and picks her up from school. I don’t trust the bus system.

Glancing at the clock, I notice it’s two-fifteen. It was time for me to get ready to head out and pick her up. After shutting down my computer, I turn the key to lock my desk. Standing, I make sure I have my wallet in my pocket before picking up my sunglasses and sliding them on my head. Opening the office door, I step out, facing my secretary, Penny.

“Penny, I’m leaving for the day. Can you have valet bring my car around,” I request, adjusting my cuffs.

“Yes, Mr. Kourakos. Right away,” she answers. She’s older and started a month ago. I had to let my old secretary, Ruby go. We had crossed the line one too many times and when I returned to work she thought our little rendezvous would continue, even after I told her I was happily married now and would never cheat on my wife. I knew then, I would have to replace her. I didn’t want there to be any problems with her, so I gave her a nice severance package, then sent her on her way.
